Former Councilman Denies Race Behind Obama Monkey Statue

Don-Ric Self Storage Owner Rick Bond denies racism involved in monkey statue with 'Obama Must Go' T-shirt calling allegations 'ridiculous.'

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — The owner of a local storage business who dressed a monkey statue in an anti-Obama T-shirt said Wednesday the statement was not racially motivated.

“It was not meant to be racial," business owner Rick Bond told Patch.

Bond, a former councilman and police officer, placed the statue in front of his Cedar Grove business, Don-Ric Self Storage at 405 Little Falls Road but removed it Tuesday afternoon after people started complaining.

“I absolutely never thought of it as racial,” Bond said. “It’s ridiculous.”

The monkey statue sported a T-shirt saying “OMG Obama Must Go.” The statue was in front of Bond’s business for at least a few days.

Bond would not say who dressed the statue, but added it was previously dressed in a Mets jersey. He said the statue was put up to scare away geese from coming close to his business.

Because the statue is near Route 3, it caught the attention of several passers-by, some of whom posted photos of it on their Facebook pages.

But some residents said the statue was racist and depicting the president as a monkey was inappropriate.

Bond did not respond to these remarks Wednesday, but added, “The less I say, the quicker this will go away.”

He refused to comment further and drove away.

But Bond’s explanation didn’t sit right with some critics.

Duncan Francis, a former Cedar Grove resident who grew up in the area, said he was very angry about the monkey statue.

“I’m outraged as a citizen and want to hold whoever is responsible for this racist act,” Francis said.

He said he found out about the statue and T-shirt on Facebook.

“There was some Facebook commentary by people opposed to Obama’s policies objecting to the statue's racist undertones," he said.

Francis said he’s an Obama supporter, but “you don’t need to be an Obama supporter to be outraged.”

Tucci called the display “appalling.”

Montclair resident Keith Brown, 34, agreed.

“It’s hurtful,” Brown said, “You think about where we are as a people and how far we’ve come and then you see something like this (so close to home).”

Brown said he works in Cedar Grove and, though he’s not involved with the Obama campaign, he has attended many pro-Obama rallies in his hometown to show his support.

“It’s messed up, regardless of how you feel about Obama,” said 15-year-old Sam Nelan, who reported seeing the statue dressed in baseball attire between two and three weeks ago.

“There’s not too much I remember about [Bond],” Township Manager Tom Tucci recalled about Bond. “He only served for a short time. I’m not even sure if it was a full term.”

He said Bond did not seek re-election after his one term ended.

Peter Beton of Verona, who described himself as a ‘Massachusetts Republican,’ said, “Obama hasn’t done anything he said he was going to do … but some idiot put that [statue] up.”

“It’s a little much, a little discriminatory,” said Jessica Mondelli, 26. “He has the right to display it, though.”

“I feel like businesses would try to stay out of anything political,” said Lauren Saxer, 23, “unless they’re trying to attract a specific group.”

Thomas Reynolds, the president of the Montclair chapter of the NAACP said Tuesday the incident “smells like racism.”

“It’s incredible to think someone would’ve put up a statue of a monkey with a white man in the White House,” he said, “and I hope the person would take a second look at the messages he’s putting out.”

Reynolds added Wednesday, “Anyone who doesn’t realize what that (monkey statue) means isn’t just insensitive,” especially when they don’t realize how it can be taken as racial.

Reynolds said Bonds needs to study American history to understand why African Americans consider this wrong.

There’s a difference in putting up a statue to chase away birds, Reynolds said, and doing something anti-Obama.

It is a shame that there are some that feel that this type of demonstration is fine and even funny. I even hate it worse that they are thrown over into the Republicans side of the road. I don't believe people like this share the feelings of any or most Republicans as much as most liberals are such haters that think people to the right are baby killers.

You are moron and some people can't wait to scream racism at the smallest thing. I see you don't get offended by the way black people continually portray white people as either abusive drunk southern racist or nerdy doesnt understand the world weirdo. Get a life and stop looking for a hand out and being so sensitive. It is in my experience that the most racist people I meet happen to be black and be the ones crying about racism.

You are a moron. I bet you have no problem when a black person calls a white person a cracker, honkey, or something of that nature. Its funny how blacks are always screaming about race, when in my experience it has been the blacks who are the more racist. They portay white people as bigoted drunk southern inbred idiots or as an easy to rob and fool nerd who can hardly make it in the "streets". Yet they seem to think they have a bad deal. It is sickening to see this all they have to do is bring up race and then they seem to get thier ways. I can't get a place where I only pay 30 dollars a month for rent but they do on a routine basis. They try to complain about the hood like it is white peoples fault that they rob and kill themselves because they have already done to outsiders that nobody wants to live or do business there. Besides it is thier choice to live there and segragate themselves because it is not illegal for them to move out and to a better neigbourhood. Instead of moving in nice places and destroying the community maybe they should start to clean up their own community and messes. I mean hell they won't even help the police get murders of the street yet they always complain. It is all BS and people need to stop falling for it.

I find it absurd that the left continuosly depicted Bush as a monkey from day one, till the day he left office. Yet when someone depicts Obama as a monkey, it is racist? The double standard and the racist card to hide behind is the inane go to for this administration. Anyone who disagrees with Obama is branded a racist. He uses his race to avoid ansewerig to any question of his policies which are detrimental to America. It is cowardly and it diminisheses real racism. Which makes this administration criminal beyond the pale.

Yes, it was racist, and if the police officer that dressed up the monkey did not know it was racist, he is the dumbest person alive (along with you). And it is political speech protected by the first amendment. As a Black person living in Verona, in 2012 I am so offended by this picture - Are all the town folks racist at this policeman and former councilman? I will be boycotting this place (Don-Ric Self Storage at 405 Little Falls Road) as should every one else!!! Unless you are a part of the KKK. I was really glad when a black man was finally elected president. I felt like Abraham Lincoln sat up in his coffin and applauded. I will also say that all the crap I hear from the birthers, the fact that Obama's attorney client records are sealed, his thesis paper is sealed and his education records are sealed, yada, yada, yada, drives me nuts. I would think that those things would be sealed on every president but I'll research it to make sure. However, having said that, I can't STAND Obama. He says he wants to have the most open and accessible White House yet when I contacted everyone in Massachusetts that could possibly help me, I called the White House Agency Liaison office only to be told by an operator that they don't pick up that line anymore. Funny, when George Bush was in the White House and I was faced with living on the street, they picked up that line. So, the operator got a supervisor who told me to write a letter. I did and marked it urgent as directed. I heard back SIX MONTHS LATER. Bull, he cares about the American people. I heard back from Bush's White house the NEXT DAY. If I was an illegal, I'd get more help. I'm voting Obama out specifically because he doesn't give a damn about American citizens and beyond that he's so freaking arrogant. And the country is a MESS.

If this man used that monkey statue for all of his tshirt displays, then I would say it is not racist since he used the statue to wear the individual shirts. If, however, this is the only time he used it, then maybe it may be taken that way. It is only racist if his intent was that was Obama wearing the shirt. Either way, it is simply something that would be construed as racist even if he did not mean it that way.

He deceived Americans about SO much!! Why do you think 80% of us from all kinds of backgrounds, religions and political parties voted for Obama... we were running from Bush and how he set us up for the depression (anyone who calls if a recession is a liar), the loss of our homes and giving giant handouts to his pals while cutting their taxes and helping them outsource jobs and manufacturing. This vitriol and hatred and abuse comes in a constant, steady stream from right wing hardiners and their talking heads like Limbaugh, Hannity and O'Reilly. They don't stop to actually hear what people are trying to tell them. No rebuttals, facts, discussion... just spewing abuse. The left tries to tell others what is going on under what we are told by lying politicians and some, not all, churches. You go nuts over anything we try to discuss and start throwing HATE bombs and insults. This is one of the big differences between the right and the left.... That says a lot about what kind of people are seeking solutions for all of us and what kind are just hating, abusing and insulting while parroting hate speech in lockstep with what they hear from the corporate-owned right wing media.

Are you kidding? You consider this free speech? How about if we just hang Obama in from a tree? Is that free speech too? This is racism, pure and simple. This is absolutely disgusting and smacks in the face of everything that this country represents. Please look back and tell me where your ancestors came from? No doubt they were Native Americans, right? I'm sure Ms. Steinfeld, that your ancestors didn't come here from a foreign country and I'm sure that they weren't discriminated against. Get a grip! If you want to be a racist, have the courage to stand up and own it. Don't stand behind the first amendment. Shame on you!!!

Back in the mid 70's a group of Nazi's planned a march through the town of Skokie, IL.. At the time the towns population was 40% Jewish. The town wanted to stop the march but the ACLU stepped in and defended the first amendment rights of the Nazi group to hold the march. The case went to the Supreme Court and sided with the ACLU. I personally find that offensive but this is part of our freedoms. I suggest in the future you do not attack someone personally, just the argument.

This isn't racism it's a monkey statue that existed there before they ever even put the anti Obama message t-shirt on it. What makes it racist is the fact that you give it that power by immediately associating it with that rather than seeing it as merely a monkey statue with a t-shirt on. This is what is wrong with so many people, everyone is so fast to jump on everything as racist or sexist or gay bashing instead of just seeing things for what they really are. While it's true that racism still exists in this day and age this is a case of people digging far to deep, would you like a shovel to help you dig a little deeper?

Spoken by someone who truly seems to not grasp anything of real informative substance. Its funny how when people, Mrs. Simpson, when they don't have an argument to stand on, as you clearly don't, they just spout some random stuff that seems more like the argument of an 8 year old who doesn't quite grasp the concepts of race, politics, logic, reasoning, and so on. If people really wish to be a part of discussions like this then they should be armed with reason and logic and make arguments that are valid and moves the issue forward. What you and people like you are doing by using these weak arguments is tatamount to saying "I know you are but what am I" Maybe that is where our problem as nation lies. We black and white are more and more uneducated and unprepared to deal with a world that requires intelligence, civility, patience, understanding, and some form of morality. I am afraid these are all things that our young people are starting to lack. Why is everything such a race issue when everyone shares the burden of making this plae work.

How very strange that the only person to even allude to violence upon Obama is you, supposedly pro Obama. Are you a beard?

Murder has nothing to do with free speech. And this pretended outrage, go find something real to get upset about. God knows there's plenty right here in River City.

My ancestors came from Ireland and oh, yes they dealt with prejudice! Ever heard of the signs "NO IRISH NEED APPLY" placed next to the Help Wanted sign? No? Bull. Or ask the Italians, oh, 'scuse me, the 'wops' how it was when they first came here. How about the Chinese and the Japanese, and all the hateful names they're called? And when it comes to hate, let us never forget the Jews, who know hate better than any other group of people. What names shall we call them? Ya see, this whole thing is ridiculous. If you are looking for rejection, you WILL find it. If you're looking for hatred, you'll find it or CAUSE it.

How about if we just see a monkey with an anti-Obama shirt on, similar to the ones you see worn all over the place, and not pretend it's more than that.

I saw a little kid at a restaurant the other day and on its bib were the words "Obama Sucks". Is that kid racist?

I despise Obama for the nature and the character of the man, not for the color of his skin. I don't care if he has stripes! He needs to find some new digs, back to Chicago with him. They have my condolences.

Our country was built on racism, power, and money. This is an insult to our President along with the daily insults, lies and untruths and half-truths we receive on a daily basis. This article, as well as many others, will continue to saturate our lies, however, Americans are intelligent and those that love this country understand the intent of this article, along with media untruths.

Americans are aware of the hate and racisms that our President endures on a daily basis, because many experienced the same thing.
The insults and disrespect of our President will continue, however, in the end, the real racists and liars with the power of deceit in America will be uncovered.

I live in Cedar Grove and I will say that everytime I've passed by the storage unit(which is almost daily) the monkey has been on the front lawn and its been a few weeks that the monkey has been on the lawn.
Unless you have clear evidence to show the monkey was strapped to a tree I don't think you should make comments like that.

This democratically elected PM wasn't inline with the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company (BP) and was talking about nationalizing the Oil Fields, which would have cut the Profits of AIOC. Operation Ajax ousted the PM and Placed the Shah Reza Pahlavi in absolute power. With the aid of the CIA, the Shah of Iran remained in power for 26 years. The CIA provided intel that lead to the deaths of 250,000 people and 100,000 political prisoners. Yes they held the U.S. Embassy hostage for 444 days, but they all came home alive. The person who put up the monkey statue did not put up an effigy of Christy as a pig. The people complaining about this statue as being offensive are not the ones guilty of fat discrimination. The act is not justifiable no matter how you slice it. You do not have the right to hide behind freedom of speech to defend a blatantly racist act. If the individual responsible were truly that clueless and really regretted the message, they would have taken the statue down as soon as it was pointed out to them that it was offensive, way before it came to light here. I am quite sure someone made comments before the weeks (according to Irene) that it has been up passed. They chose to leave it up until pressure from the public built up. The first amendment does not make poor decisions and bad acts ok. Acts of racism are immoral and. thankfully, illegal.

I saw a little kid in a restaurant yesterday with a bib that said "Obama Sucks" on it. Does that qualify as racist? Is the baby racist, the parents? Who. Ridiculous.

Don, the monkey has been there a lot longer than Obama. It wears all kinds of outfits. It had on a Mets shirt before 'hatefu' shirt in question. Wears a different outfit for different holidays. And since it's his property, it's his right to scare off the geese any way he wants. And Don, I take it you live in this town and pay a lot of attention to where the geese go. So, what did the monkey have on at Christmas?

And why the name calling? We don't call you idiot.

I am a very strong conservative who feels this anti Obama Display went way over the line of both good taste and possible racism. I believe in freedom of speech but this type of disrespect for anyone should NEVER be tolerated ! But I wonder when the outraged the ultra liberals that called for the removal of this statue will become as outraged over the lies and outragious things that are being posted and said about Romney? I have seen or heard many conservatives speak out over the years against this type of activity about Obama, but I have yet to see more than a few of the Ultra Liberals speak out against just as offensive a type of activity being done or said about Romney. It is a real shame that our schools no longer teach that it was the Republican Party that fought for the ending of Slavery in America, over the opposition of the Democratic Party !
I feel that both of those factors tends to prove that it is really the Republican Conservatives that are truly the only ALL-INCLUSIVE Political Party in America !

Don't give me your pathetic whining about how tough we were on Bush. I was on line then and watching Fox. From Sept 11 to 2006 you couldn't breath a word of criticism without being accused of aiding the terrorists, being unAmerican, unpatriotic and not supporting the COMMANDER IN CHIEF. Then, his popularity fell to nothing and the mainstream media got some courage and started to do their job. Bush was being interviewed and when asked about Al Quida in Iraq he said(I witnessed this), "There never was a connection(between Hussein and Al Quida) and I never said there was." That was the week his popularity fell to a record low. His contempt for the public's intelligence cost him his popularity.

Ridiculous. We have the First Amendment exactly to protect the speech 'others' deem inappropriate or unpopular or extremist. When everyone says and thinks and acts the same, who needs a Constitution? And a question. When you saw Palin hanged in effigy, you were outraged there, too, right? As an American; as a woman, right? Why do I doubt that?

We will not lose our 'right to bear arms' either. Count on it. Now assault rifles and such, no way any citizen needs them. But shotguns and handguns, never gonna lose those, not without another war.

As for the idea that a monkey wearing an anti-Obama shirt could lose us speech rights and lead to stricter laws, that's nuts. Where do you live, Sandy?

I didnot like some othe the things Bush did. I do not like everything Obama is doing but I respect the office that he stands in and will give him that respect. I never saw the characterizations depicting either Bush president, Clinton, or any of the other white preisdents as animals, etc that are thrown at Pres Obama. To me, that is that height of disrespect. The indians had to teach those loser Pilgrams how to plant and survive. They couldn't build and were lazy, so they had to go to Africa to get them to build and plant because the white settlers were stupid and did'nt know how to do it.
It was the black slaves, that bulit the white, capital building and re-bulit the white house after the war 1815. Benjamin Banerker design the layout of D.C. and put together the first working clock. Guess what, he was Black.
Remember you were surfs and left the industrial revolution uneducated. Africans had to teach you how to plant rice and cotton . History has now proven that Eli Whitney did not invent the "cotton gin", it was a slave. Have you forgotten that President Andrew Johnson was an indenture servant. Learn your history before calling someone a monkey, they know how to survive, the indians had to teach whites to plant and african slaves had to build for white people because they couldn't.. See, grudge-holding, this living in the past, thinking you're winning or losing off the actions of people dead lo these many years, this is what kills the blacks. But you know what, the successful educated blacks don't do that. They live in the present. They belong to country clubs, live in expensive homes, drive expensive cars and dress appropriately. When they speak there is no indication of race. No Ebonics, no slang, no 'talk'.

I don't see Condi Rice sitting around, lamenting her black background and wishing for whatever. She took the world given to her, worked hard, educated herself, made the right choices and is a stellar example of what the American dream can be for anyone, man or woman, who doesn't feel sorry for himself and his great, great, great, great grandparents. I doubt Herman Cain got to where he is today by sitting around lamenting his blackness. HA! Not a chance, that feisty little genius! I wish he was our nominee. Imagine that! What would the racists card read like then, lol.

As for the ridiculous monkey --who wore a Mets uniform two weeks ago -- if he's racist, how? Evolution teaches that we ALL come from monkeys. So how is a monkey racist when dealing with whites or blacks?

Perhaps that's where the phrase "let sleeping dogs lie" comes from. Now, I don't agree with a word you said, but for the sake of argument, let's say, as you did, "the far right has provoked all of what existed but laid dormant." Perhaps, then, race aversion is simply inbred, like our fight/flight reaction or a myriad of others we feel without reason. I don't believe that for a minute, but if it works for you....

Slavery existed long before America was discovered. Just ask the Jews.

Surely you agree that it was the whites that elected Obama. It's undeniable, so, with that being the case, how did 'the black man holding the highest office' tick the whites off?

It's just a great excuse. I abhor Obama for the content of his character not for the color of his skin. I don't care whether you believe me or not, but that's the truth. If we had Herman Cain, I'd vote him in in a heartbeat. Then what would you say?

The expenses of war and greed he inherited are not his fault, but the responsibility of getting us out of it is. This doesn't happen overnight, but these expenses are what is draining us; not basic services for our people. Anyone who believes differently is either misinformed or terribly selfish.

When I think of him standing at the State of the Union address and scolding the Supreme Court, I gag. Giving Queen Elizabeth a tape of his speeches? WTF? And that beat goes on, ring-kissing, bowing. He's a disgrace, every word he utters is treachery to the country he's sworn to uphold.

But we could sit here and write it all down in words of one syllable, show them the footage of the gaffs I'm referring to, video and audio to prove it's true without a doubt and they simply stare at you, mouths hanging open and say, "George Bush did it." Oy!

To those who are decrying a violation of the First Ammendment, Bond's removal of the effigy has absolutely nothing to do with freedom of speech. The authorities did not show up at his place of business and demand that the effigy be removed or threaten him with fines or imprisonment. Bond was simply responding to the (utterly justifiable) outrage expressed by members of his own community. He was shamed into removing a blatantly racist emblem from the side of a busy thoroughfare. End of story. This has more to do with peer pressure than violations of freedom of speech.

They can't threaten him with fines or imprisonment unless he broke a law, which he did not. Arrest him for what charge? Dressing a monkey in an anti-Obama shirt? What if Bond had been wearing the shirt instead of the monkey? Would that be okay?

He made an intelligent business move by taking it off the monkey, but I wish he'd had the ability to leave it on. It was a simple political statement, like we see all over the place. Still it's his business, so I understand why he caved.

Outrage comes so easily to the slow, does it not?

Wooow. I was disgusted by the 'statue,' and THEN I read the comments. I keep hoping there aren't so many people who are as ill-informed as to believe the untruths about Obama constantly put out there by Fox News and the big money that's trying to get Romney elected...but it's even worse than that. Here's a whole lot of people who believe what they want about our president, and the more anyone tries to show them, the more irate they get. Fine. No. It's not about race, is it?

Reverend, you are right. And, sadly, it is about race.. something that would break the hearts of my late parents (who are of a different ethnicity). There are some who do not dislike President Obama because of his race, but because of the fear instilled by lies told by the likes of the Fox organization.
And those who would lift their voices in opposition are labeled oversensitive or weak. These are pathetic shaming tactics that I hope will be countered with sharing well thought out expression. I wish us all luck in the future. No matter how the next election turns out we are going to need it.

I guess you have been watching ABC and NBC and MSNBC and not really looking at the lies that they spew not just about Romney but every time a disaster strij=kes they are quick to point their crooked slime coated fingers at the wrong party. Take the Aurora shooting ABC News retracts statement because Holmes was not a member of the Tea Prty but a member of the Democrat backed Occupy Wall Street group. Noe who is telling the lies. Zimmerman is a white male who committed a racially motivated shooting of a young innocent black altar boy. Yeah right it turns our MSNBC edited the 911 tape to make it sound like Zimmerman was tracking this altar boy because he was black. Another lie. So jump up and down about lying but who is it that jumps to conclusions without researching facts, Who edits police tapes to change the context and content to cause a racial stir. It is all Democrats.

Certainly not! The monkey is not Obama! He's wearing an anti-Obama teashirt, but what if he were a pony or a bear. Besides, we teach in schools from a very young age that man descended from monkeys. I mean, how could you know that that wasn't a white monkey under his coat?

Nothing racist about it, just anti-Obama, which a good many of us are, by the way, and the color of his skin has nothing to do with it. I wish Herman Cain had won the nomination. I'd vote for him in a heartbeat and he's blacker, if that enters the picture, than Obama.

So, isn't it just possible we hate the man, not the skin color, which is truly incidental? Do you agree it's possible? Just a little bit?

That being said you have no right to insinuate that others are ill-informed about the President or that Fox News is lying. Mr. Obama has not been a good president and that is the reason many want him OUT. I enthusiatically voted for him in 2008 and had high hopes for his adiminstration. Mike, you're right. Can't be his failures, his lack of leadership, his squandering of our money at a time when there's darn little of it to spare, his refusal to even allow his college transcripts to be seen, the fraudulent birth certificate he finally produced, his constant down-putting of American specialism, his extraordinarily poor choice of friends and mentors.

Nah, you're right, couldn't be any of that; it's that he's black, or half black. How about the bailouts, the trillions in debt, Obamacare, and then, there's the never-ending anti-white rhetoric, like when that professor gave the DC cops some grief, wow, he's like screaming about police brutality and the insensitivity of the cops ... remember, that ended in an apologetic beer summit.

Have you ever been so embarrassed by a president in your life? So damaged, so destroyed? God help us.

This is how Obama feels, what he stands for and believes in, whether you like it or not! I sure don't, but I deal with the reality.

For the moment, he's the POTUS, that includes all the citizens, not just black ones. The Panthers, you see discussing them standing at a poling place as obtuse and pathetic? Dear, there's nothing pathetic about it. What it is is terrifying, racism at it's homegrown best. How about if for every Panther we place a KKK member right beside him, also in 'uniform? Not EXACTLY true. I don't know who taught you that but they have taught it to you in a skewed way. It's easy to say more whites are on welfare because it's true. BUT whites still make up over 70% of the population. African Americans make up approx 12% of the population. Now, let's say out of that 70% of white people 20% are on welfare. And lets say out of the 12% of blacks 15% are on welfare. Who is REALLY the greater user of welfare? It's not hard to figure out.

Society & Culture › Demographics
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Breakdown of AFDC (Aid to Families with Dependant Children) in US. percent, Black 39.8 percent, White 38.8, Hispanic 15.7 percent, Asian 2.4 percent, other 3.3 percent.

You've missed the boat, djones. Yes, there are more white people than black people on welfare because the blacks only make up 12% of the population. What you need to do is calculate the percentage of those 12% that are on welfare; per capita calculations, they call it. Then you would see an entirely picture. Same with numbers in prisons. Do you know what the percentage of blacks in prison are? I know, I know, they're picked on. Deep sigh.

You people just don't get it. A lesson in Black History would help you out a lot. If you don't like to read there are plenty of videos that would enlighten you about the Black experience in America, then maybe you would understand. The amount of racism that is alive and well in the U.S. is incredible. Just look at these comments. Pizza companies claiming that Obama's healthcare will cause it to raise prices is a crock of crap as well. They just want to keep their workers in bondage and not pay them their worth and using that as an excuse. The pizza is lousy anyway. It is pathetic how people in this country think. (They kill you in Iran if you are gay). Believe me when I say, as a woman YOU and I should be thrilled we live here. In addition, the race card is used a bit too often in this country. As far as the Pizza company goes - It does not matter if his pizza is lousy. You need to understand he is just one example of what will occur once Obamacare is implemented. Small businesses will be VERY damaged and will simply NOT hire new employees because they will NOT be able to pay the premiums. AND if YOU work I hope you aware that the cost of Obamacare will come out of YOUR paycheck! Lastly while most crime in this country is committed by BLACK men against OTHER Black men, women and children, you are correct. Most mass shooters and serial killers to boot are white.

I have my own History of America I look back on. 1942 Manzanar, California and in the States of Washington and Oregon all Americans of Japanese decent are rounded up and put into concentration camps. History of World War II the very descendants whose relatives are interred in concentration camps become the two most decorated Army units in the HIstory of the United States. California, 1946 Americans of Japanese decent are not allowed to own property. 1980 one Vietnam Veteran applies for a minority student loan and is denied because we are not considered minorities even though we number 120,000 in the whole state. So bring on your racist comments but we as a people even though persecuted and stripped of our properties and dignity still fight for this country, die for the other citizens of this country because we believe in it. And Monk, could you clarify? I don't know what you mean by Statism.

God knows, small business people like me, who could put maybe three people to work full time with a good wage, simply can't take the risk and the expense so instead of growing, we earn what we can between us and forget employees. It's tragic but what can you do?

Vet, it would never work. First of all she's willfully ignorant, and on top of that boasts about it, while mocking others. I guess she's insulated, or has enough similar friends, where she doesn't believe any problems that she can't see.
And while it's a challenge for her to compose anything that makes sense, one can only suppose it's due to the prospect of President Obama getting in for another term that has brains more scrambled than usual.
The President is well received in many states and countries. It must hurt to face that. If you deem him an embarrassment or laughable, I'm afraid the joke is on you. Life isn't the Patch. It's probably the only sanctuary for your backward banter.
Posters that diminish and don't get why others are offended at a monkey-likeness being connected with President Obama, furthermore trying to rationalize and then excuse it with their own warped values are either lying or equally backward.
And since when do we label and put people down for being intelligent, and then urge them to look at the "truth" and "facts" - according to Fox or the prejudiced element here? No thanks.

You call me a racist and ignorant. Predicated on what? That I have the gall to disagree with you? How awkward that must be for you.

Er, btw, my grandkids are grownups now, so the crack about parenting classes really is rather passe, but my curiosity is piqued, I'll admit.

Oh, I get it now. You're referring to the baby I saw in the restaurant that had the bib that said "Obama Sucks" right? And pray tell, what do You think I should have done? Made comments? Caused a scene like you would have, obviously. How ridiculously rude.

Just as an aside, my children are business owners and professionals, so even there, you're off base. Condolences. Keep trying.

A Vet read my post on real racism in the 20th Century. You think you are the only people who have been discriminated against are black. Wrong answer. What part of your race was ripped from your homes and relocated in the middle of the desert with barbed wire and concertina wire fences and armed guards with orders to shoot to kill any one found outside the fence. It is a place called Manzanar, California. And as an American citizen has the black people had that done to them in the recent history of this country. I am not talking 300 years I am talking any one walking this country now. I can name one group on citizens and that is during World War II what you speak of. It is they who were denied the right to own land in California till 1952. But we didn't sit on our butts and cry about why we are so destitute because our ancestors were slaves, We gathered ourselves as truly second class citizen and clawed our way out of the hole this nation put us in. it was our friends and relatives who died to save an all white Army division of 246 men at the cost of 1340 of us. Do we play the race card no. We play the work hard and get your butts off the ground card. So you want to talk racism don't bring your tears to me you can get your self out of the slums is you choose too.

I have read a lot of comment about this subject RACISM. I have found that white people do not know what racism is...You have never had to HEAR,SEE,or be SUBJECT to the action of Racism. You have only been on the end of giving it out to other races that you thought was inferior of you....You can't feel the insensitive it take to understand what another race feel when you say or do thing that hurt them.. You have not have over 200 years of Hurt,& Nasty thing done/said to you..So you can't feel the pain you inflect on others with your words,I suggest that in order to understand another race/culture you should study other cultures to know their truth.... Other races are not your friends if you don't mix with, run around or hang out at each other homes, That is what friends do with other...
If you really want to know what BLACK people had to go through get ( If you can find it :MICROSOFT INCARTER ) It tells about the journey of the black person from the time they are brought over as slaves till about the 60's....Did you know that the word picnic was invented by white people...It meant ( this came from the MICROSOFT INFORMATION)...PICK A N_ _G_ E R to hang.......YOU will learn something that you history books will not teach you....Did you ever think ( or did you not care) There was a vast number of different people that made this country what it is today.SO please don't condemn people till you know their truth or have...WALK A MILE IN THEIR SHOES....Thank you.

Slavery has been over for a long time. No on alive today has been a slave, nor has been a slave owner. Those who want to hang on to racism, will. Those who expect racism, will experience it, whether it was meant as racism or not.

Sorry, but this "meaning of picnic" is a myth.

Picnic was borrowed from French piquenique, a word which seems to have originated around the end of the 17th century. Originally the word denoted a sort of party to which everyone brought along some food; the notion of an `outdoor meal' did not emerge until the 19th century.

According to the story the man is no longer a public figure or works for any local or state agency so he is a private citizen, so this is my take if the man wanted to make a racist statement than he can, that is just to bad for the people he offended. he has freedom of speech, but as an owner of a business then if he offends people you will see his business decline. I am not a racist but i will say that some not all but a good portion black people will scream racism at every turn and will read racism whenever they can and use it to their advantage. Today in this society I could point out 1,000 times a black person uses racism or reverse racism to every one white persons racist actions. As a side note no im not white im am 100% Native American.

As long as people WANT to see racism, they WILL see racism.
And a few others have pointed out that Bush was portrayed as a monkey/ape in editorial cartoons, but this is OK, because he is a white man?
More often than not, the one that hollers racism is a racist himself. So, get over it!

I think joking about any race, including when people put down 'White people in general" is racist. And for anyone who doesn't believe a monkey depicting our African American President is racist, please excuse the statute we have erected in your honor, standing in front of a burning cross wearing a white sheet over your head, with holes cut out for eyes and a swastika on your chest as us calling you racist, after all it could possibly be depecting and obscure French sect of monks all wearing an ancient Hindu symboly while standing in front of a bonfire that accidentally ended up looking like a cross.

FYI: I'm from the south, I'm white and I'm Republican so I'm not an African American Leftist from California that I'm sure you've decided to call me in your non racist retort.

Torri, I assure you that I, for one, would have no frame of reference to internalize a KKK cross burning. It would mean absolutely nothing to me, raised on the east coast, anymore than I internalized the Ok. bombing or Ft. Hood or any violent act committed by someone who is insane.

I never have nor ever would participate in anything like that. Still, I wouldn't take it personally, never having seen one and I certainly wouldn't be screaming that it was racist..

Like the fact that Saddam Hussein was recruited by the CIA in 1959 and trained to be a ruthless assassin. Also it was Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush who authorized the sell of weapons to Iraq.

Now when it come tpo the current state of affairs in America, the Recession started during GWB's term in office and the Party of No would rather watch America Fail "So they can select another mental midget Mitt the Twit" then to work together to fix the problem that repubilcan over spend ing brought upon America.

People who have never felt the kind of racism minorities in America are subjected to cannot see it so they refuse to believe it exists... then the racists who know exactly what they are feel proud of it because they think they are superior just for being white. To Tauraq1: You sound like the worst racist making comments here. And by the way what do you ment "angry white men"? I don't know any angry white men. I DO know a lot of angry people of ALL skin colors and genders and they are angry at the FACT that the man in the Oval office has done NOTHING, has not even attempted to lift this country out of the despair it is curretly experiencing. And make no mistake about it - things are getting worse and not better. Don't blame the repulicans currently in Congress. Mr. Obama had 2 full years, working with an almost completely democratic house and senate and he did NOTHING at all and proposed NO legislation that would help to get this completely stagnant economy moving again. He's like Emperor Nero who played the fiddle while Rome burned. Nero had an excuse - he was supposedly insane. Obama does not have that excuse. He is simply NOT fit for that particular office. (oh and I voted for him in 2008 - I never make the same mistake twice)

What killed our economy happened long before President Obama came along. He can't do anything with House Republicans sabotaging his every move. The 2000 global crash, 9/11 towers housed a global economy, and 2 Bush WARS destroyed the economy. The banking crash of 2008 couldn't be Obama's fault because he had just got elected. Hate speech has not always been protected by our Supreme Court. Do your research. Hate speech is the precursor for violence. This isn't just hate. This is racism too. You all seem to forget the history. It is on President Obama's side. The far right is nuts!

A monkey is widely used as a symbol for someone who is "monkeying around", not to be taken seriously, and unintelligent. I see no one cried "racist" about the George Bush caricatures as a monkey. Those were fine but when the subject of the effigy is black, all the sudden it's based purely on race.

Anyone not understanding that very pejorative analogies, between African Americans and lower primates, have been a staple of racist hate speech for decades is either woefully ignorant or has been living under a rock.

If unaware of that, Mr. Bond's display is insensitive; if he is aware of it, then it is offensive.

Either way, it should be removed as numerous alternative exist in which he can exercise his freedom of speech.
