Fall Means The Return Of The Scarecrows in Cranford

The annual Scarecrow Stroll will kick off next month.

It’s almost time for the popular Scarecrow Stroll and that means colorful, crazy
and very creative scarecrows on display all over downtown Cranford. This year’s event kicks off on Oct. 17 with the arrival of the scarecrows at Eastman Plaza.

According to Downtown Assistant Manager Joanne Westcott, participation
has grown every year to well over 125 scarecrows made by residents and business owners.

“Even the devastation caused last year by Hurricane Irene couldn’t stop the event. Residents, including many affected by the flood, asked us not to cancel saying their children needed the diversion,” she added.

The event is open to all Cranford residents, business owners, clubs and
organizations. This year, the ballot will be mailed to every Cranford home with extras at participating downtown stores.

“People should look for the colorful postcard ballot in the mail the second week of October," added Westcott. Prizes will be awarded in two categories: kids/families/groups 12 and under; and, adults/families/groups 13 and over. Voting will run October 18 through 29. The entry deadline is Friday, Sept. 28.Entry forms are available at the Cranford Community Center, Cranford Library, Municipal Building and online at www.cranford.com/downtown. The entry form includes tips for making a scarecrow and details about the event. The event is sponsored by the Township’s Business & Economic Development Office (formerly Downtown Management), 8 Springfield Ave. For information contact u at dmc@cranfordnj.org or 908-709-7208.
