Friends and Family Remember Victims of Old Bridge Shooting with Vigil

The community came together for a vigil Friday night in honor of the Old Bridge shooting victims.

A teenage girl wearing an Old Bridge High School t-shirt walked slowly up to a collage of photos displaying the smiling faces of Christina LoBrutto and Bryan Breen.

One of the first to arrive Friday night, she knelt near the pink, purple, yellow, and green candles decorating the pavement in front of the collage. Cautiously, she held a lighter to a pink candle. A spark finally flew and brought the candle to life, acknowledging the heart-wrenching fact that earlier that same day two young Old Bridge High School alumni were shot and killed while working an overnight shift at Pathmark.

Friends and family recalled the lives that LoBrutto, 18, who was signed up and ready to begin college at Brookdale, and Breen, 24, who was a student at Middlesex County College, left behind.

Sophie Nieto-Munoz, who was close with LoBrutto since they met in middle school, planned the vigil Friday night at Old Bridge High School to create a space for the community to come together and grieve.

"We can't accept that two people from our school have been shot and killed," Nieto-Munoz said. "We're a community. We love each other. We come together as a family."

She will miss LoBrutto's fun, quirky sense of humor that never failed to make her laugh.

"She's going to be remembered as a great, fun-loving person," Nieto-Munoz said. "You're going to remember her, and you're going to smile."

Breen was remembered at the vigil for being kind and caring.

"He was the boy next door," said friend Alison Drake, 24. "He was a great friend. He went out of his way to do things for you. All he ever did was help people."

Jessica Chuvalier, 24, stood with her arm linked with Drake's, as the pair wiped silent tears.

"That's the one thing that people should remember about him. He was sweet," Chuvalier said. "He was genuinely good."

Mourners continued to show up as the night went on with balloons and flowers in tow, embracing one another in disbelief.

And even though the candles won't burn forever, it's clear that the light of LoBrutto's and Breen's lives will continue to glow from the hearts of their friends and family.

I hope to God no one posts a comment against gun control. This guy had an AK-47. What in the world was he doing with a gun that size? Please, please let us have a civil discourse about limiting access to these types of guns. It is not enough to mourn these two young people, and ignore how they died. Having children around the same ages as these two lovely people, I cannot imagine the heartbreak and anguish their parents must be feeling today and forever. May God grant Christina and Bryan eternal rest, and their families and friends peace and comfort.

Hey Dologirl -- you don't even know anything about firearms-- so please, don't let me school you on this too.

You're the same uninformed person that denied the IRS has thousands of armed agents.

Why isn't the media calling this a "hate crime"? Why isn't the media asking if anti-depressants played a factor?

I wish that there was an armed guard or a citizen with a sidearm at the PathMark -- all of this would have never happened.

This is the problem with New Jersey -- the citizens are disarmed -- which means mutant savages like the gunman could not have been taken out like citizens do in 40 other states.

Two innocents are gone thanks to the screwed up laws in New Jersey. Unreal -- trust me folks: all of the super rich and politically connected people in New Jersey have either armed escorts or licenses to carry a gun.

For some reason, the legislature in New Jersey thinks you're too stupid and/or irresponsible to carry a sidearm like millions of people do in 40 states with little to no problem every day.

It was 3AM,no one was in the store except employees.Pathmark does nothire armed guards.Even in other states where people are allowed to carry weapons, most employers do not allow weapons in the workplace.I worked for a company with offices in many states, including FL and TX,and that was the case.
Trained police officers injured innocent pystanders while trying to take down the gunman near the Empire State Building. It's not so easy to hit a moving target.Ad the armed citizens who were at the gathering where Rep.Giffords and others were shot in AZ said that they did not fire their weapons because they couldn't get clear shot and didn't want to shoot innocent people.Having guns does not cure everything.

John Jay, you're right, I don't know anything about firearms because I don't want them anywhere near me, my family, or friends. All I know is they are used to kill innocent people. And I think arming everyone would be disastrous. Can you imagine if everyone took out their guns at the first sound of a shot, not being exactly sure who fired? Chaos. This guy was either mentally ill or on drugs, so what gave him the right to buy an AK-47 and use it on two young kids?

Dologirl -- you just made another false assumption when you stated: "Can you imagine if everyone took out their guns at the first sound of a shot, not being exactly sure who fired?"

* Your problem is that you don't know anything about firearms -- and all you know is the propaganda fed to you via TV talking heads and Obama.

* I wish to God I could have been the person to save those kids. I would have taken a bullet for them -- but not until I delivered justice to that animal -- not because I am some macho dude -- it's because I take my citizenship seriously.

* Armed citizens use their firearms THOUSANDS of times a year to protect life and property. Period. Fact. Look at these two punks in the following link :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWoLGC-n4i4

A 71-year-old licensed gun owner shot these two armed punks and sent them fleeing to the hospital -- and then to jail.

That's just one of the thousands of times--and thousands of saved lived--that law abiding citizens with guns help keep the peace.

No one got hurt because PUNKS are COWARDS -- and when they are confronted with someone who is knows the business end of a good rifle, shotgun, or pistol -- TRUST ME - they either turn tail and run or they get dropped as dead as a hammer.

NJ does not trust its citizens to PUMP THEIR OWN GASOLINE! How in the world can we be trusted to own and carry firearms? John Jay is right. Mores the pity that people die because citizens have been disarmed in NJ.

You will NEVER see these stories on the national broadcast of ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN; etc -- why? Because it negates the false reality they try to convey that armed citizens can handle themselves just fine.

I'll bet you never heard of these armed citizens until I told you about them.

John Jay, you are incredibly trusting of a bunch of people empowered to shoot whenever they feel threatened, whether that threat is real or not. MaryLou says its perfectly...how can you get a clear shot unless you are looking at the shooter? Police in NY, who are trained in firearms, wounded a group of people because they could not figure out who the shooter was.

Dologirl -- you are living in a strange world. Do you make this stuff up as you go along? The police in New York MISSED their target through poor marksmanship Were your eyes closed when you watched the video? The two police ID the shooter -- BEFORE he drew his weapon.

The officers were ~ 8 feet from the shooter -- and frankly I am amazed that they missed 9 out of 16 shots fired. It was reported the officers never drew their weapon the entire time they were on the force.

I am happy the killed the bad guy -- I am not happy they hit innocent people. I hope they get treated for the stress they went through. I know people who have had to do their work -- it affects people differently.

HOWEVER -- they better get their butts to the range after they're back on the job. Practice makes perfect.

As far as being trusting -- yes, I am trusting of someone who has an open or concealed carry because they, like myself, are overwhelming law-abiding citizens who take carrying a weapon seriously.

Are there mistakes? Sure there are -- just like 30K people get killed driving cars every day -- but you are not going to ban cars, right?

More toddlers die drowning in toilets and pools than any other type of death -- are you going to ban water, swimming, and using a toilet? Of course not.

More people die from bad medical practices -- some 200,000+ people every year -- are you going to ban hospitals and doctors?

There are inherent risks in anything you do in life. I could fall off a ladder tomorrow when I go to clean my gutters. Are you going to ban gutters and ladders?

Let us please remember that this article is a meant to serve as a remembrance of these two young lives lost. While the topic of gun control is important and of course relevant, lets remain civil and keep the tone at an appropriate level.

dologirl,
I'm all for gun control, too. But you hurt your case when you speak from emotion rather than knowledge. You say guns are dangerous. That's like saying flying is dangerous because you are afraid to get on a plane. Those people in NY were hit by fragments of concrete and perhaps bullet fragments, not wild shots.

Yes, I do speak from emotion because we are mourning two beautiful people who died unnecessarily because a gun was sold to someone who was not in full control of his capacities. End of story.

Two young people not leaching off their parents. Two young people working when they can for whatever goals they had. I didn't know them, but i saw both of them many times in the store and they were always quite pleasant. This happened so quickly, no security could have prevented it. Obviously, God needed these two beautiful people.Their friends and family's pain will never leave them. They can only be so grateful for the short time they had with them. My prayers are with them and their family's
