Gov. Christie: Decision to Stay on Barrier Islands ‘Stupid and Selfish’
Governor urges residents who ignored evacuation orders to leave if they can do so safely.
Barrier Island residents who ignored mandatory evacuation orders for Hurricane Sandy made a “stupid and selfish” decision, Gov. Chris Christie said. During a press conference in Ewing on Monday, the New Jersey governor urged those who stayed behind to get off the islands if they can find a way to do so safely.
“You’re putting other people in harm’s way. There are already rescues going on. This is putting first responders in danger,” Christie said.
High tide is expected to come in between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m., with the heaviest rains arriving around midnight before Sandy makes landfall, according to the governor.
“When it comes tonight, we’re not going to be able to rescue you,” Christie said. “The flooding along the New Jersey coastline is going to be significant.
Christie also announced the Garden State Parkway closure had been extended to include Exit 63 to the southern terminus in both directions. He urged New Jersey residents to avoid driving unless absolutely necessary. Additional closures may be announced as the weather worsens.
“People really need to stay home and stay off the roads,” Christie said. “If you have any doubt as to whether it’s necessary or not, stay home.”
New Jersey residents are beginning to feel the impact of the high winds, with 35,000 households without power, according to Christie. Those who lose electricity should expect to be remain without it for an extended periods. Once winds reach 40 mph, safety regulations prevent line workers from manning bucket trucks to fix downed fires, he said.
“These power companies are not getting out there in the next 24 hours, maybe the next 36 hours,” Christie said.

What does he call raising tolls by 87.5% on Port Authority bridges and tunnels just to protect his inept friends that are running it? Personally, I would use those same exact adjectives.

What good does a mandatory evacuation order do or a state of emergency when people ignore them and businesses expect employees to make it to work regardless of the weather.

He's a bully at he pulpit. There are words that people hear and others that make them resist common sense. Calling someone stupid is one of them. As a leader, he should try to find ways to be persuasive and convincing. I just wonder how he speaks to his children when they disagree.

I'm a doctor. My father never ever disparaged me, even when I was acting foolish. A leader needs a different strategy. Only tonight I heard someone who explained why she had to stay behind. I just expect more from leadership.

Well, folks...the storm has passed. Now the real work begins. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all, as you deal as you must with the aftermath.
I have no intention of politicizing the storm. I pray only for the safety of you and your loved ones...
Let the first responders do their jobs, and the utility workers, theirs. If asked, assist - otherwise, it is best if we wait patiently. Where possible, look in on your neighbors. Make sure they are okay.
Watch each others' backs, folks. We can weather this in exemplary fashion, or succumb to our own baser nature.
For the next week, pay close attention to the good you see done by your fellow man. The media will only be reporting the defeats, never the victories.
Patience is a virtue, and a difficult one to abide with. We will all need much patience over the next few days, as lines form for fuel, and as we wait our turn for restoration of our utilities. We're fortunate that the temperature is relatively mild - things could have been much worse.
Be sure and thank those in your community who help out when you see them over the next coming weeks. They've earned your thanks, but they only rarely receive them.
That's another change that is long overdue.
Personally, our family escaped with no injuries, and property damage can be repaired. Today, each of us knows what is really important.
Let's show the world what Jersey can do.
