Cranford Police took an 81-year-old man into custody on July 22 after he allegedly shot a deer outside his home on Madison Avenue.
August Savoy, 81, was arrested at 1:44 p.m. and charged with a disorderly persons offense as well as violating a township ordinance prohibiting the discharge of firearms. He was released on his own recognizance.
"The incident was called in by a neighbor who allegedly witnessed the incident," according to Lt. James Wozniak, who said this is his first recollection of a resident allegedly shooting a deer outside his home.
Wozniak added that the animal was removed from Savoy's property following the incident.
"We have a service that, when called, will come and removed the animal, which was done," the lieutenant said.
