The Weekend – Parades, Pool Openings and Star Gazing

Events you will not want to miss this holiday weekend

 

Welcome to the kick-off weekend to the summer of 2012 – Memorial Day.   You can start your weekend by gazing up in the sky, take a dip in the pool and of course honor our hero’s with a parade.  Below you will find just some of the great goings-on this holiday weekend.

A Tribute to Fallen Heroes Concert

Is there any better way to honor those who have sacrificed so much for us than a patriotic concert? Come and enjoy The Westfield Community Band who will be performing today. This 60-chair orchestra, now it it’s 100th year promises to provide a beautiful evening of music. Local Veterans will also be reading letters written from the battlefront and other touch tributes to fallen comrades.

Sunday, 7 p.m., Free, Fanwood

Memorial Day Celebrations in Fanwood and Scotch Plains

Fanwood and Scotch Plains have many observances scheduled to honor Memorial Day. Wreaths will be laid at the Fanwood Memorial Library and Veterans Monument Park with the SPFHS Chamber Choir performing. Then enjoy the parade beginning at 10:45 a.m. at Front Street and Park Avenue, SP. Monday, 8 a.m., Free, Fanwood and Scotch Plains

Opening Day - Clark Community Pool

The Clark Community Pool will begin their 2012 summer season today.  Swing by to take a quick dip or stay for the day.  The weathermen are promising beautiful skies and hot temps.

Memorial Day Parade Honoring Sgt. James W. Harvey, II

Sgt. James W. Harvey, II, a Clark Native, killed in action on June 20, 2011 will be honored today.  Services will take place at ALJ High School with the parade immediately following.  All are invited to honor “Jimmy” and meet his family. Monday, 9 a.m., Free, Clark  

Precious Felines Looking For Love & One Precious Pooch Too!

Want to rescue a pet?  Today’s the day.  Summit Animal Rescue will be at Pet Valu.  They have many kittens and cats and one pooch too.  If you’re ready to rescue, come by, visit and possibly take home.

Telescopes & Lectures - William Miller Sperry Observatory

Welcome all you star gazers, Amateur Astronomers, Inc., www.asterism.org, is hosting an informal lecture along with big telescopes for you to view the night sky.  What a great way to start the weekend?

Cranford-Millburn Camera Club Exhibit

Stop by the Cranford Library to enjoy the display of photos the Cranford-Millburn Camera Club, www.cmcameraclub.org, have on display.  This exhibit “Through the Artists’ Eyes” will be on display till May 31st

Springfield Pool Opens for 2012 Season

It’s that wonderful time of year again, sun and fun!  The Springfield Pool 2012 season will begin this weekend.  Bring the sunscreen, that book you wanted to start and of course your chair and get in the pool.   Don’t forget your badge, you must register before you dive in.

Springfield's Memorial Day Parade and Observances

Start your Memorial Day off with an observance at Town Hall and get ready for the parade to step off at the corner of Mountain Avenue and Shunpike Road.  After the parade, join the Springfield Veterans Alliance for a remembrance service at Veterans Memorial Park.
