A fundraising campaign was launched to raise money for the restoration of the murals, which will hang in town hall.
The Cranford Historic Murals campaign recently achieved its fundraising goal to pay for the much-needed restoration of four individual panels, each depicting an important chapter of Cranford history. Related scenes portray times as far back as the days when Indian villages existed along the Rahway River, within the borders of today’s Cranford Township. The actual art works were created in and around 1935 by Everett Ward, a local painter, as part of Depression-era art programs. The works, originally placed at Cranford High School, had been removed during building renovations several decades ago. For many of the years since that time, their location was unknown, until the unique artworks were discovered at two different locations - in a …

Event celebrates its 30th season.
When is a balloon festival not (just) a balloon festival? That’s a tough question, especially when a huge yearly event is billed as such (I mean, it's called the Festival of Ballooning, after all) and there certainly are plenty of hot-air balloons to be displayed. Still, the Quick Chek Festival of Ballooning—in its 30th year, running from July 27 through 29 at Solberg Airport in Readington—is also part amusement park, with a healthy number of rides, an arts-and-crafts emporium, a yoga and Zumba demonstration, and lots and lots of food. Of the 30 years, Quick Chek has been a major sponsor for 20. And for the first time, Patch is partnering with the festival to get you in at a great price. Between May 13 and 20, use this link to buy tickets …

Some of the school district's most talented students showed off their talents May 4.
They sang, they danced, they played instruments and they acted out stories. And they were "All In This Together." An Evening of Shining Stars — a talent show featuring special needs students from third through 12th grades — demonstrated the extraordinary talent and dedication of children with various disabilities. For weeks, the students rehearsed their acts in the auditorium of Hillside Avenue School in preparation for the May 4 performance. Sitting among their peers, the students laughed, joked with each other, and talked about classes and social engagements, much like any other group of elementary, middle or high school students. What normally sets them apart from other "mainstream" students is exactly what made them shine brighter when…

Amy Chiarello Barnett writes about one of the top 10 greatest nights of her life
I have always loved the music of “The Boss” although I cannot take credit for being one of “those” fans. The die hards who know every album, can argue song lyrics and set lists and tour dates and such. But I am a born and bred Jersey girl, and when our most famous native plays his premier gig in the largest city in the state, (not to mention in our own Essex County backyard,) ... well, attention must be paid. On Wednesday night, Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band played for the first time at the Prudential Center in Newark. And I was there. My invitation to last night’s show came via my well-connected friend Kathy. Her late night text message asking “What are you doing tomorrow night?” set into motion one of the Top Ten All Time …

Hillside Avenue School will host a talent show that highlights the skills of special-needs students. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
There will be singing, dancing and lots of celebrating as dozens of Cranford students take the stage for a talent show Friday that's being called "An Evening of Shining Stars." The young, enthusiastic performers who have spent several weeks rehearsing are primarily special needs students in the district. Although they face challenges such as autism and Down Syndrom, on Friday they will have an opportunity to show the community that when it comes to talent, they can shine just as brightly as any other kids in the district. The show will feature students from third- through 12th-grade grades, according to Sally Curci, who is organizing and directing the show. Curci is the mother of two special-needs students who will be performing in the …
