Governor Ignores Climate Change in Sandy Rebuilding

This month at an event in Union Beach, Gov. Christie finally spoke out on climate change and rebuilding after Hurricane Sandy.  His response could not be more disappointing and misinformed.

He said he did not have time “to ponder the esoteric question of the cause of this storm.”  He made it clear climate change is not a priority saying, “Candidly, I don't have time to deal with it... It's not a main concern for me.”  He even went so far as to say, “You know what? If you asked of these people in Union Beach, I don't think they give a damn (about climate change)."

Hurricane Sandy was the ninth such devastating storm to hit the Garden State in the last three years and the fourth 100-year storm to hit New Jersey in the past two decades. We have had hurricanes, tornadoes, and Halloween snow storms. There have been too many coincidences. You cannot deny that climate disruption is a factor and it is impacting New Jersey.

Climate change will only make such storms worse. We need to protect our families here in New Jersey from the impacts of climate disruption and sea level rise. In New Jersey we deserve strong action by our leaders to help reduce the likelihood and severity of future disasters.

With all the people of New Jersey that have been devastated by the recent storms, for the Governor to try to ignore climate change is outrageous, dangerous, and puts people at risk.

By ignoring climate change, the Governor is showing he cares more about his national political profile and pleasing the Koch brothers than the people of New Jersey and protecting our coast. If we do not deal with climate change as we rebuild we will be wasting millions of dollars and putting people in harm’s way.

Instead the Governor is rolling back policies that reduce climate change pollution and promote clean energy alternatives. Gov. Christie is moving New Jersey in the wrong direction by pulling us out of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) and cutting clean energy funding.

The Governor cut the DEP Office of Climate Change and has stopped progress under previous administrations to implement hazard planning to address sea level rise.

The Governor says he is too busy to think about climate change while making appearances on the Late Show and Morning Joe and doing reelection campaign fundraisers. He is trying to bury his head in the sand on climate change, but the storm surge just wiped away that sand.

The areas hit hardest by Hurricane Sandy are areas that were projected to be most vulnerable to climate change. A study by Rutgers University four years ago found that 9% of New Jersey’s land area could be under water as a result of climate change.

A recent study found that by 2050 the sea level at Sandy Hook could rise by 21 to 35 inches, meaning water could move up to three feet inland. The National Climate Assessment released in January found that the chances of 1-in-10 year coastal floods could triple by 2100.

But the Governor has no plans to move those families along our coast out of harm’s way through buyouts or hazard planning. In New York, Gov. Cuomo is implementing a program to encourage families in flood prone areas to take buyouts and relocate.  The $400 million program would offer the pre-storm value of the home along with additional incentives if people in the most vulnerable areas move or if an entire block moves.

In New Jersey, our program for purchasing flood prone properties, Blue Acres, is broke and the acquisitions have occurred in a dozen communities along the Passaic, Raritan, and Delaware Rivers. The program does not apply to coastal communities or the Bayshore area. Communities like Sayerville that want to be bought out are not included in the Blue Acres program. The Blue Acres program as is will not address the needs of Sandy relief. We need a broader, better funded program to move people out of harm’s way.

This year the Legislature released the last of the Blue Acres funding, leaving the program broke. No properties can be acquired until a stable funding source is established or a new bond act is passed. So far the Governor has not announced his plans on open space funding.

In over 20 years, Blue Acres has only bought out around 200 properties. The Blue Acres program has only spent in its history 10% of what Gov. Cuomo is proposing in New York.

Blue Acres purchases can take decades as some people choose to stay in the neighborhood. The program can take down a couple of houses but it is difficult to put together a package of neighboring homes which can then be transformed into a flood plain or flood storage area. Gov. Cuomo is working to prevent this by providing incentives for an entire block moving in the New York state program.

Climate disruption worsens extreme weather, threatening our families and communities. New Jersey is a coastal state and sees the most severe impacts of these storms. Instead of ignoring climate change, we need to reduce greenhouse gas pollution, protect low lying areas from flooding, and establish a stable funding source for the purchase of flood prone properties. The future of our state depends on it.

Enough with the "Koch Brothers" and "Big Oil"-style buzz words Jeff. You're not impressing anybody. The Governor said he didn't have time “to ponder the esoteric question of the cause of this storm.” What difference does a retrospective make when the better part of 4 counties need to be re-built? That is his focus right now and rightfully so. I'm not saying climate change isn't a concern, I'm saying you are making too much out of one line from a press conference. Guess potential topics for you this week were scant?

Once upon a time people refused to see that the world is not flat. These same type people believed that the Earth is the center of the universe & the Sun revolved around us. These were, & are the same people that have the inflated view of man that he was somehow created in God's image, thus the man in the sky view that we & God are similar in some way. It's always the mindless religion orientation that shuts out thinking science.
Christie has to deal with rebuilding, but it is worth note that come 2016, if he runs for President, that he has the Republican inability to grasp what is important to survival beyond next week.

Mr Mirra,

Once upon a time foolish people believed that Al Gore ( a man with no scientific accreditation) was speaking the truth in his ridiculous film a few years ago. It was then later proven that a large # of scientists named in the UN "global warming" report were signed to it without their consent. It was also revealed through email leaks that British "climatologists" were cooking the books to make the case for "man made global warming" despite evidence to the contrary. There are also numerous cases of "global warming" data collection thermometers in close proximity to HVAC units and black tar roofs further skewing the data. Proponents of "man made global warming" throw around BS claims that "there is no debate" and "98% of scientists agree" which is a complete lie. There is plenty of debate, especially amongst real scientists. By real scientists I mean those who are not bought and paid for by either side of the political spectrum. Science is not decided by "consensus" it it decide by fact and observation. Any time science is approached with a hypothesis of "how can we prove that man is causing global warming?" it should be discounted as pure BS because they are announcing their forgone conclusion before the investigation . The truth is there have been many times in earth's history when the climate has been both much warmer and much colder, long before the industrial age created by mankind. "Man-made global warming" is a myth - much like the flat-earth theory !

Be careful trusting ANY gov't agency offering useful info. Many of the "scientists" who are in charge of the agencies are simply political appointees with an agenda (it doesn't matter which side of the fence they come from). NOAA and NASA have had to retract stories, or "clear-up" misconceptions based on findings from their organizations. Many of the people who work for these agencies are good scientists, but they are directed in what to pursue and how to word some of their findings.

People in science are obligated to receive funding for their research endeavors, be they scientists at a university or at a gov't agency (such as noaa). Two of the largest funding agencies, NSF (national science foundation) , are run by political hacks and scientists with an agenda. If you're an ecologist or a meteorologist (insert any scientific profession) and you send in a grant proposal that doesn't refer to climate change your chance of funding is almost zero. Scientists with no interest in the politics of climate change HAVE to relate what they are doing to climate change in order to get a chance of funding. Science is driven by political agendas.

98%, where did you pull that number out of? One of the biggest problems we have (humans) is that we try to understand processes based on our own history, but geologic and climatic processes far surpass our experience on this planet. Climatic changes/shifts have occurred since our atmosphere was fully formed, some changes have been long term, others temporary. Natural climatic phenomena such as La-Nina/El-nino events, and changes in the North Atlantic Oscillation, help to explain many of the climatic "anomalies" we observe. For several years the antarctic peninsula was used as a prime example to show how global warming is causing glaciers to melt and cause a rise in sea level, as a good deal of snow and ice was melting, pack ice diminishing, and glaciers receding and calving. When these examples were being used to help demonstrate global warming the antarctic peninsula was in a very strong la-nina period. Jump ahead to today (and the last few years) the antarctic peninsula is in an el-nino period, and pack ice is thick, the peninsula mostly covered in ice/snow, and glaciers increasing again.

The conclusions that are being drawn with just 100 years of data by the enviro terrorists that are making money off of those conclusions are clearly false.

If you look at the climate issue with the help of geology and go back billions of years you can see that the climate changes quite a bit in periods when there were no big bad people here ruining things for all of the spotted owls, horse head crabs and roaches.

I took statistics, Duff, the only thing statistics is good for is to prove whatever theory you want to prove. You start with your theory then ask the questions that will prove your theory.

Climate has changed very slowly in the past. Science tells us the glaciers receded very slowly over thousands of year. Changes from sun cycles and other natural causes explain slow change. In the last 50-100 years, the climate is changing more rapidly than scientists have seen in history. The only evidence of climate change this rapid was following massive super volcanoes eruptions, releasing massive amounts of greenhouse gasses that caused a number of mass extinctions on earth. One led to the rise of the dinosaurs. Also, climate changed rapidly following a comet or asteroid impact that led to the extinction of the dinosaurs. Elevated greenhouse gasses are the only thing in the environment that is drastically different from 100 years ago. The main modern source is burning of fossil fuels. That is fact. The only argument is if the levels of gasses produced are enough to change the climate. Also if yes, how much will the climate change and how will it affect the environment? attribute the

So, Max, let's assume for the sake of argument that you're right--although humans are not to blame, the climate is getting warmer (let's ignore the kooks like Mr. Heyman for the time being). Regardless of the cause of the warming, we have to take action in response to it. To me, the Sierra Club's "Bulldoze the Shore" attitude and Gov. Christie's "not my problem" attitude are equally irresponsible. Somewhere between those extremes we need to find a way to protect vulnerable properties and deal with those which no amount of protection will save from the next storm.

I don't think any honest intelligent person can accept global warming. It is the realm of the dishonest and mis-informed. Think it through folks. Mathematically, statistical significance can not be calculated based on our limited data on climate.....that's how bad the data set is. You can't even calculate that warming or cooling are happening to any statistically significant amount based on our limited data. If you can't even measure the blip on the screen that is supposed to be global warming how can you possibly claim cause and effect.

I choose to take the word of actual scientists, the climatologists, not yahoos who have been brain washed and stupefied by Fox News and hate wing radio. Why anyone would think that scientists all over the world would purposely lie about climate change is beyond me. It's a stupid idea, i.e., that the overwhelming majority of climatologists would lie about their research, data and conclusions..

Joe,

Why would you or anyone blindly accept the word of anyone? Educate yourself so you can understand and make up your own mind.

I don't ask you to believe me. Go take a freshman level college Statistics class. Start there. Once you've done that, think through logically the things you have been told about the climate in the media. Think through the available reliable climate data in terms of what you learned in that Statistics class. Pay close attention to the concepts of Sampling, Probability, Standard Deviation Null Hypothesis, Type 1 and Type 2 Errors. Once you understand these basic mathematical concepts you will be able to grasp for yourself why I say Global Warming is at best an un-provable theory and at worst a purposeful hoax. Don't take my word for it. Don't take their word for it either.

The Sierra Club has been known to be connected to “UN Agenda 21″ -
chemtrailing, smart gridding, smart metering, de-populatiing, anti-property rights for land owners, surveillance, displacement of Indigenous, Native, and Original Peoples for Unconstitutional control of their land, resources, and soverignty, and pseudo “conservation-wildlife-local re-development-sustainability” programs (vs. real, authenti c ethical self-reliant earth preservation) etc.

Be on the watch for Trojan Horses who want to swoop in to “save” and “rescue” from either global warming or pseudo-carbon pollution. Help others to wake up. Some of the “bigger” names and organizations connected to the “environmentalism” movement are actually either knowingly or unknowingly (and even programmed or playing dumb) to keeping Geo-Engineering alive as well as unethically pushing “Agenda 21″.

The best answer is in the pure Local movement, communities and people (non-partisan, non-commericalized, and un-co-opted by outside forces) taking over town and local city meetings. Don’t be Delphi’d by them. Speak up and Speak Out. This is OUR earth, not theirs.

i,ll keep it simple for john jay and the other banjo playing extras from the movie "delieverence " on here, scientists were first starting to see the evidence of climate change in the very early 1970s so no aman 77 its not some plot obama started. the saddest part is when the faux news fans try to make science a political thing when science couldnt care less about politics much as a kettle brought to boil wouldnt care about who voted for who. listen aman the waxwork dummy you guys ran for president lost get over it already.john jay who cant seem to understand that according to "lefty" sources like the scientific american as well as a dozen others like answers yahoo etc say the current human global population is 6,677,563,921 people give or take a few rubes.the funny thing is when like last summer which was the hottest out of the past 10 yrs all also being the hottest years since they,ve been recording weather in the late 1800s on days like last july when we had record breaking temps of over 104 degrees for extended lenghts of time you,ll never see barb or john jay on here saying " so wheres the global warming?" . .currently 10 out of the 20 earth science satelites are nearing the end of their life spans. once we stop getting data from them the hee haw types here on the patch will be only more convinced that human interference in the past 100 yrs has already done great damage is all some big plot by the democrats.

So, Frank, you're going to base climate change on 10 years of data? You're going to base the water temp. off of sea side as a predictor of climate change? As for the people being affected, no it hasn't been so bad in the past, but we didn't have all the people living on the shore as we do now, we didn't have houses where marshes once stood and helped to alleviate flooding, we didn't have storm sewer systems that allowed water from the ocean and bays travel fast and far inland with an epic storm surge.

As for south american fish, name one. We've always had warm water fish off of NY/NJ from august through october (wahoo, amberjack, cobia, to name a few). We often have eddy's that break off of the gulf stream and move closer to shore bringing warm water fish with them (of more tropical origin). Your argument is silly.

I guess you missed the storms are coming more frequent and more violent?
drought in the mid west?
tornados in the winter down south?
oceans temps rising?
There are many reasons for this but the fact is it is happening

Tom

9:19 am on Monday, February 18, 2013

Forked; I don't argue with the fact that we've seen water temps rise, and land temps rise here and there. However, what the media doesn't report is that the trend has been downward GLOBALLY over the past 7 years or so. My argument is that weather and climate are cyclical, and what we're experiencing now is not out of the ordinary.
As for the storms being "more violent", tell me exactly how you have proof of that. Is it simply because that's what is sensationalized in the media and the weather channel? Tornado's in the south in winter; do you think that is anomaly? Tornados have occurred in winter in the south since Man has been in North America, there are periods when there are more, and periods when there are less.

The whole notion of global warming is a political movement, nothing more, nothing less. Once data started to show that some places are cooling (such as europe, and now that parts of the antarctic are back in a cooling period) the mantra was changed to "climate change". Once climate scientists (those who are ethical) get a real understanding of how particular climate patterns, such as ENSO, and the North Atlantic Oscillation, drive yearly weather events, we'll have a better understanding of WHY we experience changes in climate, and HOW/WHY the Earth has experienced these cycles in the past, present and future.

"The Earth currently is experiencing a warming trend, but there is scientific evidence that human activities have little to do with it. Instead, the warming seems to be part of a 1,500-year cycle (plus or minus 500 years) of moderate temperature swings." I don’t think can be any real doubt that the Earth’s climate is cyclical. On the other hand I don’t think that there can be any real doubt that humans are causing some damage to the planet and its atmosphere. That being said, on the grand scale of things, human impact on atmospheric support systems has little to do with rebuilding the NJ shore after a hurricane. Statements like “A recent study found that by 2050 the sea level at Sandy Hook could rise by 21 to 35 inches, meaning water could move up to three feet inland” are just plain alarmist, but I guess they get the author paid. According to NOAA “Estimates for the 20th century show that global average sea level rose at a rate of about 1.7 mm yr.” http://oceanservice.noaa.gov/education/pd/climate/factsheets/issea.pdf NOAA’s estimates are more along the lines of 7 inches in rise by 2050 but they are quick to point out that any future predictions are just that, conjecture.
