IHM Celebrates Easter with Sunrise Service

Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, 1571 South Martine Avenue in Scotch Plains, invites early risers and early birds to its Sunrise Celebration on Sunday April 4 at 5:30am. The Celebration, which has become a tradition in the parish over the last several years, acknowledges and incorporates elements of two religious cultures represented in its community: those of Italy and of the Philippines.

The Celebration will open with a Mass in the Main Church celebrating the Resurrection with accompaniment provided by a children's "Angel Choir". A breakfast buffet will follow in the Father Byrne Auditorium downstairs, and conclude with Easter Egg Hunts planned to challenge both toddlers and older children (to say nothing of Simon, the parish's Black Labrador mascot).

The festivities should conclude by 7:30am to allow children to catch up with the Easter Bunny at home, and for parents to catch a good nap. The Celebration is free and open to all. Children wishing to sing in the "Angel Choir" are especially invited to call IHM's Director of Religious Education Jeanne Fox for additional details and practice information. IHM Hosts Series of Thursday Night Lenten Reflections "With a Twist"

Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish in Scotch Plains continues its series of weekly Lenten talks which promise to offer a positive, forward-thinking take on the aspects of prayer, penance and sacrifice. All talks will begin at 7:30pm in the Main Church and last roughly one hour, followed by fellowship and light refreshments. They are free and open to all. Topics and speakers will include:

March 18 – Father Stanley Gomes, Spiritual Director, College Seminary of Seton Hall – "Eastern Spirituality" – cross-influences of encounters between Portuguese missionaries and Eastern beliefs such as Buddhism and Hinduism

March 25 – Msgr. Sean Cunneen (Pastor, IHM) – "The Jesus Prayer" – a reflection on the life-transforming power of one simple repeated prayer (rescheduled from February 25).

Christine Glazer, National Historical Society Representative, will offer a presentation on Andrew Jackson Downing's garden and landscaping designs shortly after the meeting. All interested in gardening are welcome.

Born - Died : 1815 - 1852

Andrew Jackson Downing, the leading American garden writer and garden designer of his day, was born in Newburgh, New York. His admiration for John Claudius Loudon is apparent from his books and their illustrations. Downing edited The Horticulturalist and wrote a Treatise on the theory and practice of landscape gardening, adapted to North America (1841). This book has a chapter on 'Landscape or rural architecture' which must be the source from which Olmsted took the term 'landscape architecture'. It was Andrew Jackson Downing who persuaded Frederick Law Olmsted's future partner, Calvert Vaux, to move from England to America. Andrew Jackson Downing was a protagonist for public parks and had he not drowned at the age of 36 it is likely that Downing, rather than Olmsted, would have received the commission to design Central Park in New York. American comentators have admired Andrew Jackson Downing's celebrity but criticised the quality of landscape and garden designs. Selections from Downing's Treatise are on the CD.ﾠ

Staged Reading of 'The Wickham Way'

The Theater Project, Union County College's Professional Theater Company, will perform a script-in-hand staged reading of New Jersey playwright Rachel Rubin Ladutke's new play, "The Wickham Way" on March 20 at 3 p.m. The production will be followed by a lively discussion with the playwright, director, actors and audience.

The performance will take place in the Roy Smith Theater at the Cranford campus of Union County College, 1033 Springfield Avenue. Admission is free.

This warm comedy explores the journey of two women, Marti and Liza, who are life partners and have returned to Liza's native Wickham, Vermont, to buy a Vermont Bed and Breakfast. Their interactions with some of the locals reveal that acceptance takes many forms.

Additional monthly script-in-hand staged readings are scheduled for April 17 and May 8.
