Turning Lemons into Lemonade, Two Cranford Children Give Back

A lemonade stand is a great way to learn about money and operating a business, however, for siblings Jared and Brendan, it became an opportunity to give to others.  The young, Cranford residents opened a lemonade stand in front of their home, selling the refreshing beverage to neighbors looking for relief from hot, summer days.  Most children who start lemonade stands are hoping to earn enough money to purchase the latest video game or their favorite DVD, but after hours of hard work, Jared and Brendan, graciously decided to donate their earnings to a local special needs school, the Jardine Academy.

The Jardine Academy, located at 75 Rod Smith Place, in Cranford, provides elementary and secondary education for children with multiple disabilities. The school creates an environment in which children with disabilities can learn while receiving an array of necessary support services which includes nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy and social work services.

“When I received the letter from Jared and Brendan, I was in awe of their kindness and generosity.  Their actions demonstrate tremendous character and I want them to know that their efforts do make a significant difference in the lives of the children that we serve,” stated Executive Director Patricia Tekel.

The Jardine Academy is run by the Cerebral Palsy League, a non-profit organization that serves hundreds of infants, children and adults with developmental disabilities each year throughout central and northern New Jersey. It operates with the mission of helping every individual regardless of disability reach their fullest potential, so they may lead happy and productive lives as participating members of their communities.
