WESTFIELD AREA Y KINDERGARTEN CLASS EXPLORES THE STUDY OF TREES AND WOOD

The Westfield Area Y’s Kindergarten class at the Bauer Branch recently hosted their first “guest experts” of the school year to finish out their unit on trees.  Michael Shults and Scott McDarby of Selecta Flooring in Mountainside visited the class to discuss wood.

The guest experts discussed how trees have growth rings and when you cut a tree to use for wood you can see those rings. The children had a chance to compare the wood from various trees.  Then each student had the opportunity to put on safety gear (a mask, gloves and goggles), sand a piece of wood and apply a colored stain. In the end the class had a beautiful array of colorful, finished wood pieces and lots of fun learning about wood.

Special thanks to the classroom parents for organizing a great way to end their study of trees and to the “guest experts” for taking their time to visit the class and make the wood learning study so much fun.
