Back to 'Normal' After Tropical Storm Andrea Soaks State

Several fatal car crashes reported; emergency landing in Newark, LBI flooded.

New Jersey was recovering from the effects of Tropical Storm Andrea this weekend after the state dealt with an emergency landing at Newark, car accidents and flooding in Long Beach Island and elsewhere throughout the state.

A flight from Boston, destined for Palm Beach, Fla., had to make an emergency landing at Newark Liberty International Airport after it was struck by lightning, according to nj.com. No one was injured.

Five inches of rain fell on Oceanport and brought wind gusts of up to 35 miles per hour to Point Pleasant Beach, according to the state climatologist's office and the National Weather Service, as reported by nj.com.

The sign in front of Joey's Pizza and Pasta in Long Beach Township displayed the same slogan for as long as many can remember: "Occasional Waterfront Dining."

The pizzeria on Long Beach Boulevard is situated in a prime location – a block from the beach, right near Kubel's Too bar in the middle of the island – except when there's a heavy rain event. On Friday, you'd should have been wearing boots, or at least flip flops and shorts, if you were in the mood for a slice or two.

Rains from the storm, meanwhile, may have been a factor in three fatal accidents in Gloucester and Ocean counties on Friday night, according to NJ.com.

A storm surge also flooded out parts of Route 27 between the Garden State Parkway and Route 35, leading to a shut down of the roadway for several hours, according to nj.com.

Up to 2,000 power outages were eported in Passaic and Middlesex counties, according to PSE&G's web site.

In Long Beach Island, flooding developed from the first heavy rain bands of Tropical Storm Andrea. Andrea, however, turned out to be like most of the Jersey Shore's brushes with tropical weather: some heavy rain, a little wind, whipped up surf, then back to normal.

But yesterday, some took to social media and blamed flooding in LBI, along Route 35 in Ortley Beach and Seaside Park, on the lingering effects from Sandy. They spoke as if this sort of thing was new and unexpected.
