Cranford Boy Scout's Trip With Troop Focus of Fundraising Campaign

Kevin McCarthy hopes to "take some of the burden off" his parents.

Fourteen-year-old Kevin McCarthy says he created his GoFundMe campaign to raise money for an upcoming trip with his Boy Scout troop "to take some of the burden off of my Mom and Dad."

The Cranford resident hopes to raise $2,500 through the crowdfunding site to cover the trip to Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, NM this summer, as well as "a new backpack, hiking boots, and other essential items," he writes in his profile.

While he says he's unable to hold a "steady job," he's raised some money by shoveling snow in his neighborhood and has been helping families that had been "devastated by Sandy."

"Although I haven't made enough to help out my Mom and Dad, I have learned many things about the value of money, responsibility, and how much a little bit of help can do for a person in need," says McCarthy.
