Five Things You Need to Know for Aug. 24, 2011

What's going on today...

1. The will host teen author Chris Grabenstein, who will talk about his funny and thriling mystery books. Those who attend the event, which begins at 2 p.m., will also have a chance to win on of his books and have it autographed.

2. Snacks, prizes and a mystery will all be part of the Cranford Public Library's Murder Mystery Musical event tonight, from 8 to 11 p.m. for teens.

3. The food pantry, 61 Myrtle Street, is in need of donations to replenish it's supply of food for needy residents. They are in need of the following: drink mixes, sugar, cereal, mayo, ketchup, instant and regular coffee, snacks, canned pasta and meals, crackers, canned fruit, instant mashed potatoes, instant white rice, canned milk and paper products. Dairy, meet and fresh produce items are also appreciated. The hours are from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday.

4. The Cranford First Aid Squad, located at 6 Centennial Ave., is always looking for new volunteer members to provide emergency services as well as administrative volunteers who contribute to fundraising, education and public awareness. 5. On this date in 1992, Hurricane Andrew smashed into Florida, causing major damage. There were 55 deaths reported in Florida, Louisiana and the Bahamas as a result of the storm.
