Hillside Avenue Tunnel Reopened

Work is ongoing, but the tunnel is passable for pedestrians.

The Hillside Avenue tunnel, which has been closed since the summer, has officially re-opened on Thursday morning.

The tunnel, also known as Kenishka Passage, was originally scheduled for completion prior to the first day of school, but was delayed as the township waited for the special order piping, Mayor Tom Hannen had said.

Closure of the tunnel also caused some students to cross the train tracks during the first few days of school since they could not make their way through the passage. Cranford Police immediately announced this and parents were warned of the dangers.

Students and parents can now safely make it to and from Hillside Avenue School using the tunnel, according to Township Administrator, Joe Hartnett. The tunnel is now lined with a wooden walkway, but finishing of the interior of the tunnel is yet to be completed.

The Township is all set to complete work on the tunnel, according to Hartnett, they are just waiting for the final go ahead from Conrail.
