Union College Relieves Some Parking Pressure

Construction in the summer has led to increased safety on the campus, say officials.

Union County College's parking lot and road renovations have led to a drop in automobile accidents at the school, according to officials. The work has also led to more parking spaces at the college, which has been plagued by parking issues for a number of years.

This week the school reported that fewer automobile accidents occurred this fall semester compared with last year. The total number of accidents reported by the college's public safety department was 32 in the fall of 2011. Due to the recent construction of a Springfield Avenue entrance and roadway, college officials said the number dropped by half to 16 in 2012.

Two students were injured in September, however, when an automobile involved in an accident swerved into them as they were attempting to cross Springfield Avenue.

Still, student safety has increased because vehicles entering the campus have fewer turns to make, decreasing the chance for a fender benders. "The new lot configuration reduced the number of internal turns and resulted in a net gain of almost 60 parking spots," according to a press release from the college. The work, which was finished in August created a new drop-off for students arriving by bus.

The new bus drop-off point puts students on campus grounds, as opposed to the other side of Springfield Avenue.  “The construction project improved safety, increased parking capacity, and provided more direct access from Springfield Avenue into the heart of the Campus,” Union County College President Margaret McMenamin said in a press release.
