Week in Review: May 29th-June 4th

A round-up of the big stories about town for the week.

Cranford paid tribute to their veterans and servicemen at the town's . Cranford police, fire fighters, scouts, rescue workers, and politicians marched through the downtown, led by Grand Marshal and CHS alum Captain Thomas W. Marotta. The Parade concluded in Memorial Park with songs, gun salutes, speeches, and a jet fly over. Residents about what Memorial Day means to them, how they were planning on celebrating,  and how we can honor our vets year-round.

A young Cranford model . The photo of four year old Alex McCoy in her Little Red Riding Hood costume wowed judges, earning her a three year contract with Ford Models. McCoy's shot was chosen from of pool of over 200,000 entries.

Local legend Max Mitchell . The 49 year old tended bar at The Riverside Inn for 26 years. Bar goers remember him for his humor and his willingness to always listen to a patron's story.

"Max epitomized the small-town bartender," Matt Lubin, a longtime patron said. "He was a no-nonsense guy who knew you and your drink, whether you were a daily regular or an occasional visitor. The Dive is a place of unmatched character, and Max was a huge part of that."

The Cranford Planning Board  The ordinance, which would allow the developer Garden Homes to add 18 more apartment units to the development area, passed 5-4. The ordinance will be brought to the Township Committee at their meeting on June 14th for a final vote.

Governor Chris Christie, a fierce advocate for fiscal responsibility, drew criticism for to and from his son's baseball game. After considerable backlash, Christie for his travels.

A Cranford teacher was honored for her excellence in teaching. Lauren Bound, a teacher at Harding Elementary School in Kenilworth, w. As part of the fellowship, Bound will receive full tuition to attend "Confratute" at the University of Connecticut this July. The five day conference brings together educators from across the country, who are able to network, swap stories, and attend important workshops on improving education.
