Tunnel Closure Causes Students to Cross Rail Tracks, Police Say

Cranford Police urge parents to warn their children not to cross the tracks.

The Hillside Avenue tunnel closure is leading some students to climb the fence and enter the rail tracks, according to an alert sent out by Cranford Police.

“Parents are urged to warn their children under no circumstances to attempt to cross the tracks,” police said. “This is extremely dangerous.”

The Hillside Avenue tunnel is expected to be complete in three weeks, according to Mayor Tom Hannen. Originally, the project was expected to be complete by the first day of school, but the piping of the tunnel, which was at first thought to be stock product, needed to be ordered. The wait for the piping caused the delay, Hannen said.

Police are instructing students and parents to use Centennial Avenue, Wall Street, Collins Street, or Hillside Avenue to get to and from school until the construction is complete.
