Blind Massage Therapist Thrives at Elements in Cranford

Otis Kerr has worked as a licensed massage therapist for the past four years.

If you talk to any of Otis Kerr’s frequent clients at Elements Therapeutic Massage of Cranford they will tell you Kerr gives fantastic massages, co-owner Sherry Mandel says.

Although Kerr is blind, he says it does not impact his ability to give massages since most therapists work with their eyes closed.

“Massage is all about technique and finding the right spots to work on,” Kerr said. “It’s all about touch.”

Mandel said that the customers at Elements love Kerr and are often amazed that he is visually impaired.

“Once Otis starts the massage they immediately forget about his disability given how great his massage techniques are,” she said. “Otis has a very good client following”

She added that clients often recommend him to their family and friends.

Kerr said he enjoys the profession because he likes to make people feel better when they are in pain.

“ I feel like I’m a doctor but a massage therapist,” he said.

Mandel said that Kerr is thriving at elements because he is hardworking, responsible and very likeable. Also, he is able to tune into clients’ needs to give them the best massage possible.

“Otis inspires me every day,” Mandel said. “He lives every day to the fullest of his ability and does not let his disability stop him from accomplishing anything.”

Kerr is also a DJ and had wrestled in High School, Mandel explained.

“I feel very lucky to know and work with Otis,” she said. “He is extremely outgoing, motivating and just an incredible person.”

For the past four years, Kerr has been a licensed massage therapist. After a phone interview with Mandel he was invited for an interview at Elements in Cranford and Mandel said that he exhibited a great personality and sense of humor, but most importantly gave an incredible massage.

She knew he would be a perfect fit at the studio.

Kerr said he enjoys working with the friendly staff at Elements who give him no special treatment because he is visually impaired.

He also recommended a visually impaired friend of his, Danielle, who Mandel immediately hired after her interview. Mandel said that in just a short time Danielle has already established herself into the Elements family.
