Local Gym Members Endure Grueling Workout To Benefit U.S. Troops

Members and Coaches of CrossFit KOA raised funds to send care packages to military troops overseas.

On April 28, members and coaches participated in a military fundraiser workout. The grueling workout raised money to send care packages
to U.S. military stationed overseas. The event was developed and organized by CrossFit KOA members Jack Ryan and Steve Zevlikaris.

“While these heroes make the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom, we realize something so small as a group workout, will never be enough to say thank you,” said Josh Mandel of CrossFit KOA, “it’s a small token of our gratitude for those that serve and protect us.”

The Military Fundraiser Workout consisted of a 35 Min AMRAP (As Many Reps As
Possible) in teams of four. After each team completed a “buy in" of 300 double unders, two team members were out running with sandbags, 60 pounds for men and 30 pounds for women. The other two members were inside CrossFit KOA climbing 15 foot ropes, performing heavy squat cleans and hitting the deck with a movement called a burpee. When the team of two returned from the run they handed off the sandbag to their two team members and then continued the rope climbs, squat cleans and burpees where the other team members left off.

More than 50 people participated in the workout resulting in donations exceeding $1,300. The care package includes razors, shampoo, soap, baby wipes, beef jerky, playing cards, music cd’s and AdvoCare powdered drinks. The care package will be sent to KOA member Rob Cortes who is now serving with his U.S. Army unit in Afghanistan.
