Don, do have evidence that this is happening? This reads like fear-mongering to me. Folks who shop garage sales are well aware that they might not have the full history of an item.

While some items are not salvageable, I was really disappointed to see how many things — which only required cleaning — were discarded after the hurricane flooding. The desks and chairs from Brookside Place School were cleaned rather than scrapped, and I was glad to see that. I suppose the level of insurance coverage is the driving factor, but I hate to see things tossed unnecessarily.

If you saw the sludge that was in my basement (2 runs thru the diswasher couldn't get it off plastic kitchen items) you would know that 1-I wouldn't store an item for almost a year in order to unload it at a garage sale for chump change and 2- The flood damage would be very obvious. So stop churning up negativity.

So if people who scavenged sell stuff somewhere, how would anyone know where it came from? Have you never bought anything from a flea market or garage sale? Have you heard about all the lead contaminated stuff manufactured in China and sold here new? You can drive yourself crazy worrying about all the possible hazards out in the big bad world.
