Cranford Resident Recognized For Childhood Cancer Awareness

Kara Shields has been advocating for childhood cancer research due to her 4-year-old son's battle with a tumor.

Cranford mom and Westfield High School teacher, Kara Shields, was honored with a proclamation for her involvement with The Valerie Fund to raise awareness and promote research for childhood cancer by the Westfield Council on Tuesday evening.

The cause is very near and dear to Shields heart after her four-year-old son, Will DeGregorio, was diagnosed with a tumor on his adrenal gland in 2012.

The results of Will's most recent MRI show that he is clear of the tumor for now, but Shields fight is not over yet. She continues to work with The Valerie Fund to advocate for more research.

Mayor Andy Skibitsky honored Shields with a proclamation in recognition of September being Childhood Cancer Awareness month in Westfield and around the country.

Shields thanked both the communities of Cranford and Westfield for the continued support of her family during Will's struggle.

"We look forward to everyday when he is out of the hospital and doing well," she expressed.
