CrossFit KOA of Cranford Raises $4K for ‘Barbells for Boobs’

Members of the gym participated in the Breast Cancer Awareness fundraiser throughout October.

CrossFit KOA in Cranford raised more than $4,000 on Oct. 12 for the ‘Barbells for Boobs’ fundraiser, which supports Mammograms in Action to provide mammograms for people in need.

CrossFit KOA had two teams take on popular CrossFit workouts called “Helen” and “Grace.” The workouts include kettle bell swings, pull-ups, 400M runs and the Olympic lift called a Clean and Jerk.

Members of CrossFit KOA sported pink accessories, such as socks, headbands, shirt and sunglasses throughout the fundraiser.

“The fundraiser is a perfect fit for CrossFit KOA as it shows a broad dedication to the community’s overall health while remaining open and inclusive of people with any athletic ability. A common misconception about CrossFit KOA is that people sometimes think they need to be in shape before they join our gym but the reality is we help people at all fitness levels get in better shape” Co-owner and Cranford resident, Steve Gregersen, said. “There is a great camaraderie and community at KOA which helps people feel more comfortable and achieve the results they want.”

Many members of “KOA Nation,” as the members call themselves, are familiar with the importance of mammograms since the gym’s breast cancer survivors were diagnosed through mammogram.

Barbells for Boobs began at one CrossFit gym in 2009, but has rapidly expanded to over 800 CrossFit affiliates. The event is held throughout October to coincide with Breast Cancer Awareness month.
