In its present form the custom of displaying figures depicting the birth of Jesus Christ owes its origin to Saint Francis of Assisi who made the Christmas creche or manger for Christmas Eve of 1223. Like Advent Wreaths, Christmas manger or nativity scene were primarily special display for families in their homes drawing them together in prayer and joyful celebration of the Season at hand.  Each year, on the Vigil of Christmas, the children of the Parish and carry the figures of the animals, shepherds and the Holy Family recreating a display that tells the story of the Christ Child.

Christmas Festival of Lessons and Carols with Holy Eucharist: Rite II
The story of the failure of humanity, the promise of the Messiah, and the birth of Jesus is told in nine short Scripture readings from Genesis, the prophetic books and the Gospels, interspersed with the singing of
hymns and familiar Christmas Carols and followed by the Holy Eucharist.
