Cranford Appoints Three Firefighters, Promotes Lieutenant

The firefighters were surrounded by family and friends at the Tuesday evening committee meeting.

The Cranford Committee appointed three new firefighters on Tuesday evening, while also promoting Lieutenant Daniel Thorn to Captain.

Gary Merwede, Douglas Petschow and Matt Steitz are the newest additions to the Cranford Fire Department, which should solve staffing issues in the department, according to Chief Leonard R. Dolan III.

Daniel Thorn holds over 25 years experience in the Cranford Fire Department, as well as a Master’s degree in Public Administration, experience as an EMT, Fire Investigator and Fire Inspector. His family accompanied him when appointed to his position of Captain on Tuesday.

Merwede is a third generation firefighter in Cranford. He is currently pursuing his degree in Fire Science at New Jersey City University. Chief Dolan noted that Merwede’s grandfather was his Lt. when he first started in the department.

Dolan noted that after a few years, Petschow finally realized his calling was to be a firefighter and the department was happy to have him on board. His father was also a member of the Cranford FD.

Finally, Steitz, also a third generation firefighter, is very knowledgeable and a great asset around the firehouse, Dolan explained. Steitz two brothers and father, who are Union Firefighters, accompanied on him stage during his appointment.

“The additional personnel is essential in helping out the staffing of the department,” Chief Dolan said as he thanked the committee.

The appointments will not result in any additional expenditure, according to Mayor Thomas Hannen. He explained that the money for the additional staff was previously allotted during the creation of the budget and the Chief committed to stay within the budget.
