Cranford EMS Squad Called to Port Newark Incident
Union County crews are in Newark on standby as authorities search a ships cargo for possible stowaways.
A search of shipping containers in Port Newark has been going on all morning. Authorities suspect the ship contains stowaways after an initial search of its contents this morning. the ship left for Port Newark on May 30, from the United Arab Emirates, then stopped in Pakistan and India.
Volunteers from the were part of a group of 12 ambulance crews that were requested to Port Newark this morning, said John Staunton, the director of publicity for Summit's EMS team.
"The ambulances were standing by while federal and state authorities searched a cargo ship for a container that may have had numerous stowaways on board. Since it's highly likely that these people will require medical treatment, the Incident commander requested the ambulances from both Union and Essex county," Staunton said in a statement.

Other Union County EMS Volunteers came in from Clark and Kenilworth. Non-volunteer crews from Cranford, Elizabeth and Union County EMS joined the US Coast Guard, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Port Authority of NY/NJ Police and NJ State Police at the scene. Summit's Kari Phair and Jane Mahoney, both off-duty, responded to the incident at Port Newark.
