Cranford PD Second in Law Enforcement Challenge

The department was awarded for one of the best overall traffic safety programs.

The Cranford Police Department received second place in the New Jersey Law Enforcement Challenge, which is a competition between law enforcement agencies of similar sizes and types.

The challenge rewards agencies with the best overall traffic safety programs in the court, including efforts to enforce laws and educate the public about impaired driving, speeding and occupant protection.

In 2012, the Township of Cranford saw a 14 percent decrease in crashes, according to Cranford PD.

The department also placed third in overall score for all categories of the competition. As a reward for third place, Cranford PD received a portable Drager Alcotest 6510 screener, a handheld breath alcohol-measuring device valued at $450. The entire department will also be trained on how to use the device at no cost.

"The Law Enforcement Challenge is financed through a grant awarded to the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)," a release from the Cranford Police Department stated. "Both of these organizations believe an increase in traffic enforcement in a community results in a decrease in motor vehicle crashes, injuries, and fatalities. The New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police has established its own state Challenge program along with the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety."
