CPD, County Police, EMS Tend to Critically Injured Man in Nomahegan Park

NorthStar helicopter was requested following an alleged suicide attempt at county park on Springfield Avenue.

, fire and EMS units responded to Nomahegan Park on Springfield Avenue at about 2:50 p.m. Wednesday to provide medical assistance to a male following an alleged suicide attempt.

According to Cranford Lt. James Wozniak, local police responded to assist Union County Police after the male was discovered with what are believed to be self-inflicted wounds. Wozniak could not disclose the victim's name or the nature of the injuries, only that they were life-threatening. Paramedics and EMS crews responded to treat the patient, quickly determining that he should be transported via NorthStar medivac helicopter to a trauma center.

The Cranford Fire Department responded and set up a landing zone for the helicopter in the park. Wozniak said there were no traffic disruptions resulting from the incident. No other injuries were reported.

"We were just there to assist the county police," Wozniak said.

The victim was transported to the trauma center at University Hospital in Newark, Wozniak said. The county police are investigating the incident. Union County Police Chief Daniel Vaniska could not immediately be reached for comment regarding the incident.

In July, Union County Spokesman Sebastian D'Elia told Patch that suicides in Union County parks are not uncommon, adding that police respond to about one a month. On July 8, man was found around 10:45 a.m. in Rahway Park.
