Man Had Pellet Gun Under Driver's Seat During Traffic Stop, Police Say

A Newark man was arrested for unlawful possession of a weapon on Ramapo Road.


A Newark man was found with a pellet handgun under his driver's seat after a traffic stop on Ramampo Road at Munsee Drive on Dec. 23.

At approximately 11:50 p.m., Patrolman Spencer Durkin pulled over Javier Ortiz Jr., 21, for a missing license plate and expired registration. During an investigation at the scene, Durkin discovered a .177 caliber pellet handgun protruding from under the driver’s seat, according to police.

Ortiz was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose. He was also issued citations for the missing license plate and expired registration.

He was arrested, processed and released pending an appearance in superior court.
