Man Killed After Parkway Accident in Cranford

A 21-year-old driver was involved in a crash in Cranford and was later killed attempting to cross the parkway lanes on foot.

A 21-year-old man was killed just before 1a.m. on Monday following an accident in Cranford on the Garden State Parkway. The man, identified as Luis Sarmiento of Riverside, by the Star-Ledger, was allegedly crossing the parkway when he was struck by a vehicle going south, according authorities.

Unconfirmed reports that night suggest that police were initially alerted to "a body found in the middle of the road," report around 12:50a.m. near mile market 139.7 in Kenilworth. Sarmiento who was fatally struck by two vehicles as he attempted to cross the parkway, had been walking away from his Honda, which was involved in an accident a half-mile away near Cranford, according to the article.

The drivers of the vehicles that struck Sarmiento spoke to police, according to the report. By 1:30a.m. all lanes were shut down for an investigation. No one has been charged with a crime in this incident and state police are still looking into the matter.
