Police Arrest Drivers for DWI, Marijuana Possession

Busy police blotter covering June 1 through June 8

On June 1, police arrested Scott E. Feeney, 28, of Edison and charged him with possession of cocaine, possession of paraphernalia and hindering apprehension. Patrolman Spencer Durkin initially stopped the subject at Raritan Rd. and Moen Ave. for failure to wear his seatbelt. The driver provided a false name, and the age and description of the driver did not match the provided name on the license, officers said. Feeney was arrested for hindering apprehension. A homemade pipe and suspected crack cocaine were recovered from the vehicle, police said.

June 2

Police assigned to the "Click It or Ticket" enforcement detail at North Ave. East and Carpenter Pl., stopped a vehicle because the driver was not wearing a seat belt. While speaking with Alkareem Harris, 18, of Elizabeth, Ptl. Spencer Durkin observed a bag of suspected marijuana partially concealed in a door compartment. Harris was placed under arrest and later released.

June 3

Nicole Ricca, 28, of Cranford was arrested for DWI by Ptl. Eugene Perrotta. Officers responded to a report of a motor vehicle crash on Burnside Ave. near Elise St.  Officers said further investigation revealed that a vehicle operated by the arrested subject had struck several parked vehicles on Burnside Ave.  Ricca was arrested for DWI and transported to Rahway Hospital for evaluation. No other injuries were reported. None of the other vehicles were occupied.  Ricca was issued a summons.

June 4

A vehicle was observed driving erratically and swerving on North Ave. East in the area of the Garden State Parkway and was stopped just into Roselle Park. Ptl. John Rattigan detected a strong odor of marijuana and located a ZipLoc bag with suspected marijuana, in the center console. Jose Martinez, 19, of Irvington and Marquis Taylor, 21, of Rahway, were arrested.

Police also arrested 19-year-old Alexander Gazsi of Cranford for underage consumption of alcohol. The subject was located and determined to be intoxicated during the check of a suspicious group (4 adults, 2 juveniles) leaving a wooded area between the Lehigh Valley Railroad and the Garden State Parkway by Bryant St. and Dermody St. Other parties were identified and released at the scene, after determining they were not in possession of alcohol or visibly intoxicated.

June 5

Karl Johnson, age 75, of Manasquan was arrested for DWI, refusal to submit to a breath test and having an open alcohol container in his vehicle.

Johnson was arrested following a motor vehicle crash investigation on North Ave. West near Miln St. when it was determined he tried to pass a turning vehicle on North Ave. and then struck that vehicle. Police detected the odor of alcoholic beverages on the driver and then noticed several open containers of beer and vodka located in the vehicle. 

June 6

Michael Robinson, Jr., 21, of Newark was arrested for DWI after initially being stopped for erratic driving and failure to wear a seat belt at North Ave. East and Carpenter Place. Police detected an odor of alcohol and proceeded to conduct roadside sobriety tests on the suspect.

On the same day, police also arrested a juvenile male, age 17, from Linden for possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia. The suspect was initially stopped for driving his vehicle across the center double yellow lines. Ptl. Spencer Durkin observed a small bag of suspected marijuana in a dashboard compartment and located a suspected marijuana pipe on the driver, who was subsequently arrested and released pending juvenile court proceedings. 

June 7

Police stopped a vehicle on Commerce Drive because the front seat passenger was not wearing a seat belt. The officer detected an odor of marijuana and located bags of marijuana on the persons of two rear seat passengers, Rafael Sanchez, 25, of Rahway and Lanel Ross, 20, of Rahway. Ross attempted to conceal or destroy evidence by placing an amount of marijuana in his mouth, which was retrieved without incident. Both were arrested for possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and destruction of evidence. The front seat passenger, a 25 year-old male from Rahway, was given a summons for failure to wear a seatbelt.  No charges were issued to the driver.
