Police Find Baby in Burglary Suspect's Car

Cranford Police arrested three Roselle men near a home on High Street this week.

Police probably weren't expecting three men and a baby when they made arrests in an alleged burglary attempt Wednesday morning on High Street. Isaiah Thomas and Cory Collins both 19, and Calvin Steed, 25 — all from Roselle — were taken into custody and charged with a series of burglary related crimes.

Cranford Police Officer Spencer Durkin and Sergeant Guy Patterson found one of the suspects sitting in a white Chevrolet Impala with a 14-month old baby girl in a car seat, said police. It's not clear what relation the toddler had to the suspects, but she was taken to police headquarters and released to a family member.

It began some time around 9:30a.m. on Wednesday when a neighbor called police about two men seen exiting a car parked on High Street, walking up to a home and knocking on the door. The pair circled around to the back of the home and police soon arrived. "The males attempted to flee the area, but were quickly apprehended at an adjacent property," a Cranford Police official said in a statement.

Police said they found evidence the men tried to enter the home in the 500 block of High Street through the back porch. According to police possible proceeds from the heist were inside the parked car at the time of arrest.

The suspects were charged with third degree conspiracy to commit burglary and receiving stolen property, according to a police statement. Thomas was hit with an additional set of charges including third degree criminal mischief, weapons possession, possession of burglary tools and a criminal attempt. According to police the men are responsible for multiple burglaries in other areas. They were taken to Union County Jail where they were being held in lieu of $50,000 bail.

An appearance in Superior Court is scheduled for Dec. 14.

Police who worked this case include Detectives Ryan Greco and Michael Andrews. Police Chief Eric Mason said in the statement that the help of a neighbor who phoned in to police was the reason police were able to act quickly. "A Cranford resident stepped up and took action in the face of possible suspicious activity,” he said.
