Second Bomb Threat This Month At Union County College Was A Hoax

The Cranford campus of UCC was re-opened at about 3:20 p.m. after police investigated the college.

For the second time this month, Cranford campus has been the victim of a bomb threat that turned out to be a hoax.

According to Detective Lt. James Wozniak of the Craford Police Department, a bomb threat was called into the college. The call was received at approximately 3 p.m. Local police immediately responded to the Springfield Avenue campus and evacuated the buildings.

"We called in the Sheriff's Department K-9 Unit and the Bomb Squad to sweep the buildings," Wozniak said.

Following a search of the buildings, law enforcement officials determined that the bomb threat was a hoax. The campus was re-opened at about 3:20 p.m. and classes resumed.

Wozniak said the investigation and evacuation of the campus resulted in traffic delays on Springfield Avenue. The entrance to the campus serves as a bus stop for NJ Transit buses. The buses were forced to circle the campus until the road leading onto the school grounds was again opened to traffic.

This is the second time this month that a false bomb threat was received by the campus and police are continuing to investigate the source of the threat.

was called in on April 2, and like Wednesday's call, was also received just after 3 p.m. At about 4 p.m., fire alarms began to sound throughout the campus as students, staff and faculty were evacuated from all of the buildings on the campus. The April 2 threat led college officials and police to make the decision to close all three Union County College campuses - Cranford, Plainfield and Elizabeth. Union County Police Chief Daniel Vaniska said earlier this month, however, that Cranford was the target of the threat.
