Tell Us: Should Speed Limits Change in Marlboro?

The speed limit is changing on a portion of Route 79. Where else should it change?

The county and state Department of Transportation approved a speed limit change on Route 79 between Wyncrest and Ridge Roads, reducing the speed to 45 mph.

The previous speed of 50 mph has been reduced to 45 mph. The NJ DOT signed off on the change on Jan. 4.

Marlboro residents have previously spoken out on Patch and at Township Council meetings about reducing speed limits on other township roads, including Union Hill Road.

On Wednesday, when Patch published the new Route 79 speed, Patch readers shared their mixed opinions:

Patch reader Joy Calogero said, "Well, maybe dropping it 10 mph instead of 5 would make a better impact. People drive 10 mph over the speed limit as a standard. Now, I will have even more people driving too close to me."

But Patch reader ITzcoolGUY said, "This is absolutely absurd. Vehicles now days are meant to be driven faster. They can accelerate, turn, and respond quicker and quieter than ever before. With these improvements we should RAISE THE SPEED LIMITS not lower them. I think a bigger concern for me is the Generation X drivers getting too old to drive. With age they are loosing their vision and reaction times. More should be done to make sure that older individuals actually belong on the road."

Tell us: What do you think? Should more speed limits be lowered in town? Should they be raised in certain areas? Comment below and join the conversation.

Everyone is always rushing to get from one place to another. I am even guilty of it. But it is for our safety. If you choose to speed way over the speed limit, you are putting you and others at risk. Cars are meant to be driven responsibly not reckless.

We seem to forget that 79 has HOMES on it. Its not the turnpike. Except for the little part where it meets 18, it is two lanes. There are schools on it. Slow down people and smell the roses.

The speed limit on route 79 should be 35 near the H.S., that is a very dangerous section of road there for the kids to walk on. There is no reason for that road to have a speed limit of 50. I would be fine with a speed limit of 40 on the entire stretch of road except by the H.S. it should be lower. Also, we desperately need a left turn signal on the intersection of Wyncrest Road and Route 520 by the Marlboro library. There is a blind curve there and it is also hard to see when the sun is setting in the evening. Cars routinely go through the red light while making their left turn as there is a lot of traffic coming in the opposite direction. I don't why no one is bringing this issue up.

The speed limit on School Road between Wyncrest Rd and Rt 79 should probably be raised to 30, I constantly have to warn visitors that the speed limit is only 25 mph due to it being a trap. It also takes forever to get to the post office when I travel on that road. Only on the curve should their be a sign warning people to slow down to 15 mph. Otherwise 30 mph strictly enforced would probably be fine. It's a main road with a double yellow line....
