Westfield's Sofka Freed on $25,000 Bail Following Wedding Fight

Matthew Sofka, of Westfield, was arraigned at 5:15 p.m. Monday, court documents show.

Edgar Road resident Matthew Sofka, 26, was freed on $25,000 bail Monday, after being formally charged in a fight that broke out between two wedding parties at the Society Hill Sheraton early Sunday morning and was captured in the attached YouTube video, which has garnered nearly 900,000 views, according to reports.

Sofka was charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, reckless endangerment, resisting arrest, failure to disperse upon official order, disorderly conduct in a physical or hazardous manner and disorderly conduct while engaging in fighting.

Philadelphia Police said yesterday that Sofka, whom they referred to as "the main combatant," is the man who can be seen on the attached video fighting with a police sergeant.

Sofka, a Westfield High School class of 2004 graduate, was wrestled to the ground by officers and needed to be Tasered to be subdued, police said.

Reported to be a relative of one of the grooms, Sofka was released Monday after partially posting $25,000 unsecured bail and is next due in court for a preliminary hearing on Thursday, Oct. 25. Two other men allegedly involved in the after-hours brawl received summary disorderly conduct citations Sunday morning, according to police. Investigators expect to make additional arrests in connection with the fight after interviewing witnesses and reviewing the video.

A 57-year-old man, identified as Vincent Sannuti of Huntingdon Valley and reported to be the uncle of one of the brides, suffered a heart attack as he attempted to avoid the melee that involved as many as 100 guests, according to reports. At this time police have said it is unclear if he was involved in the fight before he stepped outside the hotel.

A neighbor of Sofka's told NBC news that he was "always friendly" and recalled an instance where he shoveled out her car following a snowstorm.

I was at this unfortunate event. Prior to the point which the video captures, officers shoved the bride. Sofka put his hand on the officer to step back and was then engaged by several officers. This, unfortunately led to the brawling. Officers absolutely abused their powers. Some should loose their badges. These folks had nothing to do with the fight in the bar section of the hotel. This was escalated by the officers.

The whole incident is tragic for the guy who died and thoroughly embarrassing for all the participants in this fight. Just amazing how people are so clueless

Hey Jim, you must be one of those westfield parents whose kids are never wrong and always in the wrong place at the wrong time. When police officers are trying to control things you do what you can to stay out of the way or help them. It sounds admirable that this guy was protecting the bride....but it is likely not the case.
