Cranford Seeks More Funding for Flood Damaged Homes

With most funding supporting shore communities, mayor says town will seek other options.

At Monday’s workshop meeting the township discussed its desire to send additional information on flood damaged homes to Trenton to see if they can obtain more funding for mitigation, Mayor Thomas Hannen said.

Last spring, Cranford was allotted $3.1 million in federal funding for flood mitigation and elevation of 18 homes in the township. This money will still be put toward those homes, but Hannen is hoping they can add additional homes to the list.

According to Hannen, each time a disaster is declared they are able to put in for mitigation funds, which the Township did again this year when Sandy hit.

“It appears most of that funding is going to shore communities,” Hannen said.

Since this year’s funds for FEMA mitigation appear to be going to Sandy damaged shore communities, Cranford is going through another program, Hannen told Patch.

Right now, the township is putting together a more expansive list of homes in need of mitigation, including those on the previous list, to send to the federal government.
