Cranford Takes Steps to Clean Up Rahway River

The committee approved several items in order to move forward with debris removal.

At the June 24 meeting, the committee approved several items to fund de-silting and de-snagging the Rahway River, which is filled with debris and silt since Hurricane Irene.

The committee approved moving forward with several grants to fund the project, as well as a shared services agreement with Union County, which is in connection with the USDA Natal Resources Conservation Grant for Sandy Recovery. Also, the committee awarded Hatch Mott MacDonald a contract for engineering design services in connection with the USDA grant, according to the Cranford Chronicle.

Deputy Mayor Ed O’Malley mentioned that the committee previously announced items towards debris removal of the river, such as the $5,000 Community Development Block Grant and the $330,000 grant from the USDA to fund the river de-snagging.

Debris in the Rahway River and the build up of silt is something the committee would like to address right away, because the current state of the river could cause problems during future storms.
