4,853 residents voted in Wednesday’s special election.

Cranford residents favored Republican Steve Lonegan for the vacant New Jersey U.S. Senate seat in Wednesday’s special election, Clerk’s results show.

Of the 4,853 voters on Wednesday, 2,449 voted for Lonegan with Booker a close second at 2,331 votes. Other candidates received less than 25 votes each. However, the unofficial results do not include mail-in ballots.

The winner will serve out the remaining 15 months of Frank Lautenberg’s term. Lautenberg was the final World War II veteran in the senate. He was 89 when he died on June 17.
