NJ Insiders Split Along Party Lines After Final Debate

Some 89 percent of Democrats gave Obama the debate win, while Republicans declared Romney the winner by the same margin.

New Jersey political insiders gave their candidates the edge on the final presidential debate. However, most believe President Barack Obama will be the consensus winner over Mitt Romney among national media outlets.

According to a Patch flash poll sent to elected officials and political party insiders in New Jersey, 17 out of 19 Democrats responding believed Obama was the victor, while 16 out of 18 Republicans declared Romney the winner.

“Gov. Romney's executive capabilities were on full display,” one Republican insider said. “This will energize the voters and clearly demonstrated that he will return America to being viewed as being professionally run as a business and ALL Americans are its clients.”

Democrats were also impressed with their candidate.

“I think this performance was strong enough to give him a few more votes in OH and possibly put him over the top,” one Democratic insider said.

The results of the flash poll saw political insiders stand more firmly along party lines than in the first two post-debate polls. In the first post-debate Patch poll, 100 percent of Republicans and 38 percent of Democrats believed Romney was the winner, with 70 percent of respondents agreeing that Romney would be declared the consensus winner among media outlets. After the second debate, 89 percent of Democrats declared Obama the winner and 83 percent of Republicans gave the win to Romney, with 70 percent of respondents believing the media consensus win among media outlets would go to Obama.

In Patch’s third debate poll, 78 percent thought the consensus win in the national media would be given to Obama.

Some Republican insiders were irked by Obama’s tone during the debate. One Republican said the moment that would stand out in the minds of swing voters from the foreign policy debate was “Obama's rudeness, sarcasm and disrespect towards his opponent.”

However, some Democrats believed Romney failed to show himself a strong leader on foreign policy issues. One Democrat said the moment that would stand out to swing voters was “Mitt Romney agreeing several times that Pres. Obama is right on foreign policy.” Another Democrat said what would stand out from the debate among liberals and progressives was “Romney's simplistic understanding of foreign policy, i.e. ‘we have fewer ships today.’”

Patch Red and Blue Garden State surveys were sent to 190 Democrats and 145 Republicans. If you are an elected official or party leader and would like to be included in future surveys, contact Associate Regional Editor Jacklyn Corley at jacklyn.corley@patch.com or Regional Editor Mike Pignataro at mike@patch.com.

Some more info for everyone. Sesame Street invests in hedge funds and private equity......isn't that ironic. Amtrak - from the budget On another coincidental note, Amtrak's budget mirrors the Federal Budget Revenues $2.8 B Expenses $3.9 B budget DEFICIT $1.1 B Right up there with the post office for examples of effective government run operations don't you think.

I think Obama should also be required to know that the marines still issue bayonets and use them. So we have fewer horses but probably MORE bayonets than we used to.
BellairBerdan October 23, 2012 at 08:21 PM
XJS your data on that please, not your made up numbers, real facts.
XJS October 23, 2012 at 08:27 PM
Bellair - http://www.marines.com/operating-forces/equipment/weapons/bayonet http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bayonet Get it Bellair? They issue bayonets.
What you talkin about Willis? October 23, 2012 at 08:31 PM
I'd be good with Trump but he and Romney have the same business credentials. Obama couldn't hold either's jockstrap
Julles51 October 23, 2012 at 08:41 PM
B@B - It didn't take very long to inject race into the conversation now did it? Anyone who doesn't like Obama's policies is automatically labelled r-a-c-i-s-t! Too bad that label doesn't work anymore...you libs have used it so much that it now has no effect whatsoever which is too bad because when racism does rear it's ugly head we won't care (believe)! Talk about shooting yourself in the foot!
Donna Griffin October 23, 2012 at 08:42 PM
Lindsay - Are you better off now than you were 4 years ago? I think that is pretty much what this election (and every election for that matter) boils down to. You may be comfortable making excuses for a President who could not deliver on his promises. I'm not prepared to do so particularly since President Obama has expressed no new and improved policies going forward. He was a sitting Senator before coming into the Presidency. To claim ignorance over the condition of an economy over which he was governing would lead me to think that he was not up for the job the first time around. I'm ready for some change right about now. We can argue over winners of debates, but I think there have been very few undecided voters out there for quite a while now. If the numbers continue to trend the way the pollsters are presenting, my gut tells me we are looking at a new president come January.
Julles51 October 23, 2012 at 08:42 PM
B@B - "Menacing"? Is that like "Scary Black Man"? Would you have said the same thing if the president was also Caucasian? Newsflash!!! Obama is also Caucasian!!
XJS October 23, 2012 at 08:46 PM
Numbers wise, I'm seeing "about 200,000" on every google search I run looking for the number of active marines & 40,000 reservists. That's 240,000 bayonets. Additionally, the army apparently has a bunch out there too (although they no longer train in it). How many active duty military were issued bayonets in 1916? Apparently less. http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2012/10/23/not-to-be-a-stickler-on-bayonets-but/
What you talkin about Willis? October 23, 2012 at 08:51 PM
swamps nice work on that.....it's like being behind 42-0 in the first half and then the losing team outscores their opponent 10-7 in the 3rd and 6-3 in the 4th. Final Score 52 -16 Obama will never recover from his LOSS in the 1st debate. People saw him as the fraud he is. You can't put the crap back into the horse
Julles51 October 23, 2012 at 08:52 PM
Maybe we learned how to disrespect a president during the Bush years when we were littered with daily diatribes/death threats/Bush hanging from trees (racist, maybe?), etc. The list goes on and on and on. We just figured we'd start behaving like you liberals. Oh, how are those thousands of death threats against Romney working for you?
Julles51 October 23, 2012 at 08:57 PM
Mike - When did Obama put an end to Bush's draft? I must have missed it when my son was sent to Iraq by Bush...oh, wait! I never happened! What a moron.
Julles51 October 23, 2012 at 08:57 PM
"it" never happened.
J.D. Luke October 23, 2012 at 08:58 PM
More bayonets seems a bit of a stretch. it seems that we produced some 1.5 million of them between 1942 and 1943 alone.
Julles51 October 23, 2012 at 08:59 PM
Boy do you open the door with comments like that! The real Romney?? How about the real Obama? There's not enough comment space for me to list the contradictions about Obama - at least those things about him that we're allowed to know. Very first thing Obama did as president - sealed his records. Does that tell you NOTHING?
Dan Grant October 23, 2012 at 09:06 PM
What a bunch of morons looking up information on Bayonets and horses. The point was clear. You would be better off buying Rmoney a map of the Middle East so at least he knows where Iran is.
Julles51 October 23, 2012 at 09:07 PM
R-A-C-I-S-T! Jeez, when will you ever learn. We'll repeat it for the slower people. We...don't...hate...Obama...because...he's...black. We...hate...him...because...he's...an...inept...president. And no, he's not a good man.
BellairBerdan October 23, 2012 at 09:11 PM
XJS, no one said they didn't issue bayonets anymore. They issue less. If this is really a point you and yours need to argue about I feel sad for you if that's all you got. Dwelling on such minutiae you should join the Rainman Party or at least Cavalry Men for Romney http://cavalrymenforromney.com/
J.D. Luke October 23, 2012 at 09:11 PM
That clearly shows ineptitude, as the correct word would be 'fewer', not 'less'.
XJS October 23, 2012 at 09:18 PM
Bellair - Let's not be ridiculous here. I agree the comment Obama made was funny. However, he meant it in such a way that he was saying "They're outdated." My point was they're still in use. He doesn't seem to know standard marine issue. FWIW, I doubt Romney does either. I sure didn't until a retired marine friend made the point. Last night I laughed when Obama said it. It was (and remains) amusing. However, Bellair, YOU brought up "show me the numbers". Now that I have, you have no leg to stand on and continue with your drivel. Admit you're wrong & we're done. Thanks for the fun, but until you actually make a relevant point or objection, I'll refrain from answering you again. BUT if you continue to argue with me about numbers, I'll continue to bury you - like I do in every thread. Because you don't like or seem to understand the difference between fact and fiction. JD- 1916 not 1945. 1916 was not wartime (we didn't even really gear up to enter it). Dan - agreed on the map. I'm not interested in voting for Romney personally & only pointed to numbers b/c Bellair made a big deal out of it.
George Clark October 23, 2012 at 09:38 PM
guys, romney agreed with everything obama has done, besides speaking more on bengazy before the investigations are completed. 911 took four years and was a complete charade of an investigation. Ever wonder why in all other plane crashes and investigation of terror evidance is preserved and not carted off the next day as in 911? how they told firefighters to evacuate building 6 and knew exactly when it was coming down with an implosion? you people don't care about the truth of bengazi because when we get to the facts you can't handle the truth. Terrorist is a vague and confusing term. Are we terrorists when we drone people at will including the women and children around the bad guys? are we terrorists when we, and Israel bomb schools and aspirin factories in Iraq or palestinians? You people don't seem to realize. Teams like seal 6 are now for sale and or made by the powers that be people rich or desperate enough to buy the arms and supply the simple minded fighters thinking they are gonna win something worth while by killing. Forget what you haven't learned throughout history and we'll all keep repeating it forever. If we last that long. lol
BellairBerdan October 23, 2012 at 09:42 PM
umm XJS, just an FYI...remember there was a WWI? Want to guess what years that was? Perhaps your lack of knowledge is why you misunderstood that "less" does not mean "none". It's time for Wapner, Rainman.
Nj Ghost October 23, 2012 at 09:48 PM
Good lisa, Although you could never ever vote for Obama you decide that you will not vote for Romney either. So, by not voting for Romney you are allowing a vote for obama to stand therefore you are voting for obama...But yet they are both a piece of crap......Look in the mirror, You should live long enough to do what Romney has done for people in their personal lives......For God's sake read once in awhile and get you head out of MSNBC......"L"
Nj Ghost October 23, 2012 at 09:51 PM
Stuffin, surley you joke..A three party or more system could cause a President to be elected with 34 % of the vote....not smart

George those who do not learn from history are destined to repeat it. Obama railed against the debt, spending and the deficits. He has gone on to increase the same debt, spend more and increase the deficits. That my philosophical friend is all anyone needs to know. It's all the economy, stupid! High debt, budget deficits and too much spending do not create jobs or promote economic stability. Weak economics makes us weak to our enemies. We beat Russia because they were weak economically. Now they are rooting for Obama so they can pay us back.

Lisa is a troll. a non vote is a vote for Obama. If lisa can't see where Obama is taking this country then she hasn't been paying attention, or she agrees with what he is doing Don't be a hyprocrite
Janet Culington October 23, 2012 at 10:07 PM
The primary thing Obama has going for him are the non-producers and old school labor lords who want to maintain control, of which there are many.
