Union County Lowers Walnut Avenue Speed Limit

After an ongoing push by the township, the county has finally lowered the speed limit on Walnut Avenue.

The County of Union officially lowered the speed limit on Walnut Avenue in Cranford this week.

In September, Cranford held the final ordinance reading for the Walnut Avenue speed limit, but was waiting on the county for official action.

After years of debate, Cranford has been pushing the county to lower the limit after some complaint by residents. Prior to the lowering,  the speed limit in front of Cranford Public Library is 25, but further down the road it was 35 miles per hour when school was not in session.

Now all of Walnut Avenue will have a solid 25 mph limit.

"Responding to a request from the Township, the Board of Chosen Freeholders agreed to a consistent 25 mph speed limit along Walnut Avenue from South Avenue to Lexington Avenue," the county said in a release.

Cranford Patch previously reported that three fatal accidents have occurred on the road over the last 20 years, according to police data.
