Update: Voter Turnout In Cranford Is Low, But 'Steady'

Voters continued to stream into polling places throughout town early Tuesday afternoon.

A steady stream of voters trickled into polling places throughout Cranford Tuesday to cast their votes in the Nov. 8 general elction.

Charles Giordano, a poll worker at the , said there was been a "fair turnout" as of about 2 p.m. A veteran of the Korean War who served in the Navy, Giordano said the first wave of voters arrived at town hall when the polls opened at 6 a.m.

Inside town hall, residents were directed by signs to room 108, where two tables manned by poll workers were set up to accomodate registered voters who arrived to cast their ballots for local, county and state elections. Locally, four candidates are vying for two seats on the Township Committee. Incumbent Mayor Daniel Aschenbach - a Democrat - and his running mate Thoman Hannen Jr. are opposed by Republicans Andis Kalnins and Lisa Adubato Nesi. There are also three Union County freeholder seats up for grabs.

The polls at the were relatively quiet during the afternoon, but poll worker Burton Mandel said there was a steady stream of voters earlier in the day.

"It's been steady, but not like a presidential election," Mandel said, adding that the early morning hours were the busiest time so far. The first voters arrived just as the polls opened at 6 a.m., followed by another wave of residents between 7 and 8 a.m.

Workers were anticipating more of a crowd after 5 p.m., when residents stopped at the polling places to vote after work. The polls close at 8 p.m. Click for a list of polling places in Cranford.
