Brookstriders Brave The Rain For Annual 5K Race

For the second year in a row, hundreds of runners took part in an event aimed at encouraging students to get moving.

The light rain and chilly temperatures didn't stop the Cranford Brookstriders from lacing up their sneakers and taking to the streets for the group's annual 5K race on April 22.

For the second year in a row, the Cranford Brookstriders held a 5K race and 1-mile fun run/walk in an effort to get local students to be more active and make health-conscious decisions.

The Brookstriders are a group of parents and students from Brookside Place School. The event began at Brookside Place School, before winding through Cranford's tree-lined streets and ending back at the school, where runners smiled as they crossed the finish line.

The PTA held its first annual Brookstriders 5K last year Brookside Place School. Approximately 225 runners participated in the fun run and 180 runners in the 5K race. This year's race featured an equally large number of participants of all ages.

Cari Cichlar-Lynskey, a marathon runner and one of the parents involved in organizing the annual event, said her original goal last year was to raise funds that could be used to fund programs geared toward keeping kids active.

Last year's event raised almost $8,000. Cichlar-Lynskey said all of the sponsorships came from Brookside families who own local businesses.
