CHS Bowling Team, DECA Club Raise Funds for First Aid Squad

Cranford students and Garwood Lanes hosted a 'bowlathon' to help support the local squad's efforts to restore it's flood-damaged building.

Beyond the usual crash of the pins at Garwood Lanes on Feb. 2 was a community united behind a cause, raising money to help restore the First Aid Squad in Cranford New Jersey that was damaged by Hurricane Irene.

The bowling team and DECA Club’s Bowlathon was in full swing. The bowling team and the DECA Club - Distributive Edu-cators Club of America - enhances the co-curricular education of the 118 students enrolled through the fields of marketing, management, and entrepreneurship. Bowling coach and DECA Advisors Richard Goldstein and Donna Cathcart decided to introduce these aspiring business students to another aspect of entrepreneurship — giving back to the community. School faculty and members on the first aid squad were on hand to donate and participate in the exciting event.

Using the owners of Garwood Lanes, Dawn Perry and Doreen Keane, as examples the students were able to enjoy an afternoon of bowling and socializing while raising more than $600 for the Cranford First Aid Squad. It is because Garwood Lanes was willing to donate all playing time that afternoon for the bowlathon that so much money was raised, no profit or monetary incentive was received in return. Garwood Lanes is located at 346 North Ave. in Garwood and hosts Saturday morning youth leagues that are always enrolling.

Furthermore, the bowling team will be competing in the State Tournament on Feb. 11 at Jersey Lanes and the DECA Club will be competing at the state competition from Feb. 26-28 in Cherry Hill where 55 members that advanced from the regional competition in January will take a shot at making it to the National Competition in Salt Lake City Utah in Late April.

The Cranford First Aid Squad will host the re-dedication of its squad building on Feb. 26 at  6 Centennial Ave. in Cranford. They are always looking for volunteers so stop on in, meet new people, and have a good time.
