CHS Girls' Hoops Team Expects Big Season

The Cranford Cougars girls basketball team, with five returning starters, looks to build off of a strong three-year stretch.

The 2011-12 Girls basketball team returns all five starters from last season despite only starting one senior, Morgan Miller. The Cougars are amidst a memorable run including three consecutive and one state sectional title.

Miller is a four-year starter and a two-year captain for the Cougars. Most recently, Miller was named the NJ News 12 Scholar athlete of the week. Miller is a great leader on and off the court. Miller is a dangerous two-way threat, especially from beyond the three-point line.

Junior Jess McCoy returns for her third season in the starting lineup coming off of a 2010-11 performance that earned her 2nd team All-Union county. McCoy is a versatile player who has the ability to fill in at any position and score from anywhere on the floor.

Junior Jenna Goeller returns for her second season in the starting lineup as the point guard for Cranford. Goeller is a strong passer and has the ability to knock down the three-pointer.

Also returning for her second year in the starting lineup is junior forward Kaitlin McGovern who serves as a key presence in the paint for the Cougars on both ends of the floor.

Rounding out the starting five is sophomore Malread McKeary, who returns after providing energy, athleticism and defense to the Cranford starting lineup in her freshman season.

First off the bench for Cranford will be sophomore Carly Maucione who provides the team with interior shot blocking and the ability to stretch the floor on the offensive end with her three-point capabilities.

A deep and seasoned roster has this year’s Cougars squad poised for a hot start that may carry them to yet another deep postseason run.
