The Role of New Jersey in the Civil War

William Gillette, Ph.D., Professor of History at Rutgers, will offer a reconsideration of the state’s wartime role. The traditional view that New Jersey was a copperhead stronghold is rebutted. The home front and the battlefront will be touched on, but emphasis will be given to the political front. Professor Gillette is the author of three books and 24 articles. He contributed nine articles to "The Encyclopedia of New Jersey," and his "Jersey Blue: Civil War Politics in New Jersey, 1854-1865," was picked by New Jersey Monthly as a Top Ten non-fiction book about New Jersey. The program is funded by the Horizons Speakers Bureau of the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Arts.  Sponsored by the Cranford Public Library.
