High Schoolers Display Different Faces in County College Art Show

The exhibit displays self-portraits created by seniors from Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School.

You have only until next week to see works of art created by local teens in which they show decidedly different views of themselves. “Faces – Student Art: Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School Exhibit” opened at Union County College's Tomasulo Gallery June 13  and the show closes July 11.

The exhibit, under the direction of art teacher Jeffrey Gutterman, is comprised of self-portraits done in charcoal on paper that were, created by seniors from Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School.

Again, these are self-portraits, but with a twist: The student-artists were instructed to draw themselves, not as they normally look, but in a distorted fashion, so that their faces appear funny, unattractive, or scary faces.

Each artist presented his or her visage as it would be seen in the controlled light of a single bulb. Then they used the photos as models they drew. The goal of the exercise was to show the human face expressing extreme emotions and to communicate these feelings to the viewer.

The students participating in the show are: Lesley Aviles, Dana Cappaccille, Quinn Cicolello, Emily Dzuback, Alexa Gelfand, Shaina Gordon, Shannon Healy, Sloan Ibarra, Jacob Kennedy, Marianne Khalil, Dustin Loh, Brie Manns, James Masback, Ariana Paradiso, John Roberts, Jackie Roiz.

The Tomasulo Gallery is located on the first floor of the Kenneth C. MacKay Library on the college’s Cranford campus at 1033 Springfield Ave. Gallery hours are 1-4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 6-9 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
