Hillside Students "Make a Difference" with Field Day Celebrations

Children participated in fun activities that promoted service learning.

Who said lending a helping hand couldn't be fun?

Hillside Avenue School held their first ever Make a Difference Day this past Friday. Make a Difference Day, a re-tooled Field Day, encouraged fun, exciting activities that also promoted service learning. Students took part in a wide range of charitable projects, from card making to food drives.

The day saw many types of activities for children of all ages. First graders worked with Peer Leaders and parent volunteers to write thank-you cards to the men and women serving overseas, penning 60 in total. They also learned the history and symbolism of properly folding an America flag. Second graders created and decorated a sign for the custodial staff, thanking them for their dedication during the harsh winter months. There was also a school-wide food drive for non-perishable food and pet food. Working in pairs, students decorated canvas bags and filled them to the brim with treats. Kids chose to donate their bag to either Cranford Family Care or the Plainfield Animal Shelter. Cranford Family Care received 60 bags of groceries, and the Plainfield Animal Center received 20.

The most thrilling moments of the day came during the Mini Relay for Life. Classes broke into "team-classes," carrying banners and signs during their walk. The HAS PTA asked families if they would be willing to make a small contribution of one dollar to the American Cancer Society. Through their efforts, the first through fifth graders raised over $303 for the American Cancer Society.
