Robert F. Hand Memorial scholarships awarded to CHS seniors
First annual award honors Officer killed in line of duty
At a recent ceremony, Cranford Policemen's Benevolent Association President Matthew Nazzaro presented the first annual Officer Robert F. Hand Memorial Scholarship to Cranford High School seniors Deanna Stirk and Emily Weisgerber.
The scholarships were presented during the Cranford High School Senior Awards Ceremony. Both recipients were selected based on their history of volunteerism and academic excellence. Scholarship committee chairman Stephen Wilde and Peggy Cleveland, daughter of the late Officer Robert F. Hand, participated in the presentation.
Nazzaro acknowledged the sacrifice that the Hand family endured and reminded the audience that the Hand family will not be forgotten.

"The purpose of this scholarship is to let both the Hand family and the members of our community know that we have not forgotten the sacrifice that Officer Robert F. Hand and his family has made," Nazzaro said.
Officer Hand was killed during a motor vehicle pursuit on February 11, 1975. He is the only Cranford officer to have been killed in the line of duty.
