Bette Jane Kowalski, Freeholder

Cranford resident Bette Jane Kowalski serves on the Board of Chosen Freeholders.

  • Kowalski was first elected to the Board of Chosen Freeholders in September 2004 and was re-elected in 2007.

  • She is the first woman from Cranford to be elected to the board.

  • She was the chairwoman of the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders in 2007.

  • Growing up in Cranford, Kowalski graduated from the Cranford public school system.

  • She is regularly seen at community events like river clean-ups and tree planting drives.

  • She is not only serving as the second vice president for the Cranford Democratic Committee, but also as a committee woman for Cranford's District 21 and outreach coordinator for the Cranford Democratic Club.

  • Kowalski has a master’s degree in journalism from New York University and earned her B.A. in history and English from Hunter College.

  • She has served as editor of World Press Review, and has worked in various capacities with publications like New York Newsday, the Village Voice, Publishers Weekly and the Stamford Advocate.

Bette Jane earned her Phi Beta Kappa at Hunter College, another of her accomplishments. Besides, she's a terrific daughter.

Wow. I knew she was a terrific freeholder but I did not realize she was a Phi Beta Kappa besides.

but the distressing fact is when she ran for freeholder twice, cranford's own populace majority did not vote for her. Wonder what the reson is?

Look who's talking. You lost all six elections you ran in, both countywide and in your hometown of Garwood, who roundly reject you by wide margins at every opportunity. Don't be jealous of someone who's successful, even if you're a failed politician.
