NJ.com: Firefighters Rescue Boy in Eastman Flood Waters

The teenager was out in a kayak when it tipped over, throwing him into the flood waters.

Cranford firefighters rescued a 13-year-old Hampton Road resident who was found clinging to a tree in Sunday morning's flood waters along Eastman Street. NJ.com says that he had been using a kayak to get around the flooded Eastman area of town when the boat capsized, throwing him into the water. Family members spotted the boy clinging to a tree about 200 feet out in the water and called 911. Firefighters responded to the scene at about 10:36 a.m. They rescued the boy, who was beginning to lose his grip and suffering from early stages of hypothermia.

Command Center Keeps Busy During Storm

The mood in the mobile command center at Claremont Place and Central Avenue was a mixture of relief and being on edge early Sunday morning, as emergency officials began to see the clearing in the flood, but continued to monitor the river in case of a sudden turn for the worse. Traditionally set up on Claremont around Normandie Place or Central Avenue, the command center is staffed by police and department of public works personnel, with assistance from the county's emergency management office. Working out of a mobile command headquarters supplied by the county, officers monitor weather and flood conditions on computers with the water rescue team on stand-by for potential evacuations. Flooding Not as Bad as Anticipated

The overnight flooding was less than feared with the storm more closely resembling the 1992 than the large scale Tax Day 2007 flood or 1999 Hurricane Floyd flood. Flood waters started to recede shortly after 1 a.m. with many roads remaining impassible. The emergency shelter set up at Orange Avenue School had around a dozen individuals for the night, many veterans of the shelters set up at OAS during the 1999 and 2007 floods. The OAS parking lot was packed as many in the flood zone moved their cars in the late afternoon following police warnings regarding potential flood conditions. OAS Turns Into Voluntary Flood Shelter

Rahway River expected to overflow dikes in overnight hours.

The Cranford Police Department has ordered voluntary evacuations of the township's flood zones early Sunday, indicating that the Rahway River is likely to overflow the dikes in the early morning hours. The American Red Cross is currently transforming Orange Avenue School into an emergency evacuation shelter. The crowd is light, with more expected to arrive as the night progresses. Mayor Mark Smith visited the shelter shortly after midnight, indicating that township officials are monitoring the situation and are hoping for the best, while preparing for the worst. Driver Tears Up Munsee Lawns, Hits Parked Car

The Cranford driver was charged with driving while intoxicated and careless driving.

A 19-year-old Cranford resident lost control of his car Wednesday morning and drove up on two front lawns on Munsee Drive, striking a parked vehicle and tearing down shrubs and a tree. At around 1:42 a.m. the driver, a resident of Yarmouth Road, was traveling north on Munsee Drive, according to the Cranford Police Department. As he negotiated a turn about 100 feet south of Yarmouth Road, he caused his vehicle to jump the curb near 35 Munsee Drive. He struck a tree, an unoccupied vehicle parked in the driveway, tore out some shrubs, and finally came to a rest on the neighboring front lawn. The driver was charged with driving while intoxicated and careless driving. There were no serious injuries.

Police Arrest Sleeping Bicyclist, Drunken Drivers

Cranford police made a slew of drug and alcohol arrests last week, including one that involved a sleeping bicyclist from Elizabeth. Details: Wednesday, March 3:Officer Tim O'Brien observed suspicious activity inside a parked vehicle while patrolling the Union County College parking lot at 12:52 p.m. Through further investigation, the 19-year-old driver from Perth Amboy was arrested for possession of marijuana, CDS paraphernalia and CDS in a motor vehicle. Thursday, March 4:O'Brien observed a bicyclist blocking the sidewalk on North Avenue and Miln Street at 12:36 p.m. He appeared to be sleeping. Two Cars Jump Curb at Claremont and Normandie

A two-car accident sent both cars on to a residential lawn at the intersection of Claremont Place and Normandie Place Monday afternoon. A Lexus was traveling on Claremont towards Orange Avenue when it ran the stop sign and was hit in the driver's side door by a Buick traveling towards Riverside Drive on Normandie at around 2 p.m. Barry Levy, the driver of the Lexus, said a pick-up truck and a bus from the Union County Pipe and Drum Corps blocked the stop sign and he did not see it until after the accident. Levy said the force of the impact sent his car on to the lawn of a house at the intersection. He proceeded to make a U-turn on the lawn coming back on to Normandie, before proceeding back through the intersection and parking his car. …

Debris Likely Caused Hillside Chimney Fire

No one was injured in the Saturday night fire.

Karen Adamson was cooking dinner at home Saturday night when she noticed that the fire in her fireplace was flickering a little higher than usual. Then she heard a rumbling outside. At 6:27 p.m. Cranford firefighters responded to a chimney fire at 239 Hillside Ave. No one was injured in the incident and there was no structural damage to the residence. The Adamsons had the fire going for most of the day. It had died down when Karen and her husband left to visit a friend's house and they stoked it back up when they returned. Though the cause has yet to be officially known, Adamson and Captain Helge Nordtveit of the Cranford Fire Department believe the fire was due to some debris in the chimney. Police: Another Burglary, Cranford Kids Charged in School Trespass

A Lincoln School burglar alarm led police to charge four Cranford juveniles with criminal trespass on Friday. Police are also investigating a burglary that occurred Sunday at a service station on South Avenue West. Details: Friday, February 26:Cranford police were dispatched to Lincoln Avenue School at 4:48 p.m. on a burglar alarm. Officer Patrick Fay found four Cranford juveniles, between 14- and 15-years-old, near an open boiler room door. Police believe the suspects entered an unlocked boiler room door that led into the school building. They were walking around inside the school, then exited through the boiler room door when Fay found them. The juveniles were taken into custody and will be charged with criminal trespass. Cranford Driver Charged in Fatal Crash

One dead, seven injured in I-85 crash.

A 20-year-old driver from Cranford was charged for reckless driving in a motor vehicle crash that killed one and injured seven Saturday in southern Virginia. Media reports say that Bilal Badruddin was driving a van carrying the Temple University dance team when it swerved off the highway and hit a guard rail on Interstate 85. Kammini Ragoopath of Lansdale, Pa. was killed in the crash. Seven others, including the driver, were injured. Read the full story here.
